Well, I finally took the plunge and installed the #6 TST Plate in my 96' CTD. I have had the plate just over a year, but have been too scared to put it in the truck. I am afraid I will grenade my transmission. Oh well, you only live once right. I have always wondered what it would feel like. I still haven't driven it yet though. I'm letting the rtv cure on the rear diff before I refill it with synthetic. I don't have guages yet and I know I could be playing with fire, but the #6 is supposed to be relatively mild. I don't get on it too much. Just had to post. Can't wait to drive it.

You will like it and notice a big difference if your converter is on the tight side. If it is on the loose side like my stocker was, it won't be real impressive. I do recommend gauges - right now! If you feel the T/C slipping, try really hard to keep it from doing that, it will hurt it. Especially if it is the clutches instead of the T/C.

I started with a #8 plate in my 96 2 years ago. That rehooked me on POWER and I had to have more. My trans went out before the #8 plate it just hadn't been replaced yet. It was replaced after a trip pulling my 5er as it just couldn't take the power and tourque. And to think back and that was just the start. Good luck and as always have fun and enjoy your truck.

Really would like to borrow one before I bought one. May sound stupid but I would. I would like to see a 6 or 8 before I bought it. Any one up for that. I WILL send it back and pay shipping if anyone is interested, or has one sitting on a shelf somewhere... .
 
Be very very careful with that #6, do not put a load on the engine with out guages.

I am egt limited in direct and over drive when towing. ie if I mash down on the go pedal the needle on the egt guage doesn't stop, it will blow past 1300 with no problem.
 
As time goes on and I get differnet plates in my hand I'll try it in my pump, I just tried a #6 and it works very well..... FYI!

first impressions

Well, I finally got to drive the truck with the new plate installed. I must have the worst luck or I am an idiot, because I must have done something wrong. I watched the video about 4 times before doing the job, yet there is still a problem. When I get on the go pedal, at about 1/2 pedal or sooner, I hear a loud hiss sound and then a moaning sound. It sounds like the last to cranks on a water spigot that is moaning. I hope you know what I mean. I couldn't get a feel for the new power because of this sound. I totally freaked when I heard it. Anyone know what it might be? I did have one bolt left over when the kit was installed. It's a bolt with a hex head and some type of protrusion coming out of the head with a hole in it. I swear I never saw this bolt in the video. I guess I will just go back to stock. I don't have the stomach for these upgrades. I hope it wasn't my auto moaning. I just had the transmission serviced last month and they supposedly adjusted the bands. Don't know what to do now. Any suggestions?

Before driving it anymore, check the rubber boots that attach the intercooler to the turbo ducting. You may have had a boot work loose and with the extra boost from the new fueling schedule it's causing hissing noises at the leak.

For this reason, I think a boost gage is mandatory on all turbo charged diesels, stock or modified. It can get ugly if you loose your boost and don't know it.
 
Like Fistfull said, check all of the intake and intercooler hoses from the turbo to the air intake manifold. Make sure the hose is under all of the clamps far enough so that you can see the edge of it. Then tighten them. I don't know what the torque should be on the clamps. I just tighten until it feels like you won't get much more.



The bolt you have left over is the breakoff screw that can be used in the front hole, engine side of the AFC housing to make it look like no one ever messed with it. ;)

Yep. If you torque down on the bolt, head will break off like the OEM bolt that took the Torx bit or a chisel to remove it. I only tightened down mine enough to be snug so it wouldn't break.



As the others said, it sounds like a boost leak, and the turbo will be louder. One word of caution, make sure to have boost gauge. My stock turbo was fine 'til the #10 went in. My gauge only went to 30# at the time, and could peg it without much trouble. Now have a 60# gauge. After a short while, the turbo started to make an unusual howling noise. I checked the end-play. Where I had none before, I now did, and was out of specs.



I sure hope you have an pyrometer to watch the EGTs.
