I'm thinking about towing my 2WD Dually with the 4 speed automatic behind my motorhome.

First thing I would have to do is put in a driveshaft decoupler since I know the factory transmission does not have a rear pump to circulate the fluid and the manual says DONT do it!

So here is my question regarding the steering and brakes.

One. I seem to recall the power braking system has a hydraulic assist. I have a RVI braking system on my current tow vehicle that depresses the brake pedal for braking assist and emergency break-a-way. I have tried braking the truck with the engine off and its REALLY REALLY hard. Is this really doable?

Two. Will the front wheels turn to track the motorhome as it turns or is the power steering mechanism too stiff to allow it?

I wouldn't advise flat towing it. You'll have no braking ability do to the brake system. A trailer would be the best option. It could be done but at what cost and inconvenience. That's a lot of wear and tear on that heavy of a vehicle. Just my .02.

Do they make tow dollies that can handle the truck weight and front axle width? You'd still need the decoupler but would get one axle brakes ... if your motorhome can tow a dually it may have some extra capacity, and a dolly might be simple enough to move around empty if you needed it out of the way in camp or site.

Towed my dually behind motorhome and in my opinion flat towing is the best and easiest. There are tow bar base plates available. I use the Demco Air Force One which uses the air brakes on the motorhome to control the brakes.
Yes the wheels do turn as the coach does without any problems, but remember you can't back up a towbar.

I have towed well over 40000 miles now including to Alaska and back.

Thanks all for input.
Larry, you especially gave me the info I needed. I have a 04 American tradition with the 8.9 Cummins and the Allison 3000 similar to what you have.
