What works good with the Smarty and towing 17,000 GVW?

I just bought a HTB2 62/14 and it is o. k. but I think hotter then it should be. Other people I have talked to run cooler egt's with more weight and the same turbo.

I have 35's and 3. 73 gears.

A good friend of mine does alot of towing and wanted to be able to run higher settings with his computer chip, "bully dog", I recommended him the phat shaft 62 from Industrial Injection. He has driven it up and down the east coast and loves it. He says it runs strong and has plenty of power and his egts stay in check , where before with the stock turbo they would climb. The egts still climb but they hit a ceiling and "like a brick wall" the egts just stop climbing .

Just one experience I wanted to share with you. .

I personally love my bullet but I do not tow

thanks, jr

A 62/12 may spool better for towing

YUP - your load, tire size and differential gearing are DEFINITELY out of whack for what you are trying to do... ;)

So basically I just run around in 5th gear to keep the RPM's up and only run 6th on I-5 at 70MPH.

$2,500 to swap gears is way to much. I dont' want to spend that much for a gear swap.

consider gearing

I bet you spent nearly that much for 35" tires. I know you spent more than $2,500 for tires and the HTB2.

Before you dismiss the regearing idea, give some studious thought to how you want to drive your truck. How fast do want to go when towing, at what weight, what gear or RPM?? Do some gear ratio / RPM calculations with your current tire diameter. I think you would be pleasantly surprised with the everyday acceleration improvement from lower gears too.

Instead of a gear swap, have you check out one of those gear vendors gear splitter units. Have no idea what they cost, but it would be another choice

I'd try swapping to a 12 housing first. If it is in good shape, HTT will trade for $200 or so. Did that when I got my 64/14 used, and converted it from a 3rd gen turbo.

his gearing isn't that tall considering he has a 6speed. If he had an auto with 3. 73's and 35" tires that would be another thing. I have 3. 73 with 245 19. 5's (just under 33") and wished I had gone with 285's or something of the like closer to 35" to get my highway gearing better. I rarely need 1st when pulling 10k with the current set up and it pulls through the gears pretty quickly.

i pull my toy hauler with a combined weight of 24. 5k with 3. 73 and 6sd. glad i didn't go 4. 10's. 1800rpm's at about 60-62 mph is damn near perfect.

as for turbo selection i think twins are the only way to go if your gonna pull around big haulers. just my . 02.

i tried towing with just my injectors and really had egt problems but after i tried smarty on SW#5 i can climb the same hills at 1300deg or lower at about 15mph faster. i still have to feather the throttle in the hills to keep the temps in check, but i don't have any cars stacked up behind me either.

That much HP and you have the stock turbo?

yep, stock turbo, injection pump and lift pump. i only run on SW#5 when towing and i made 486hp on that. i am gonna be gathering parts to build a set of twins in the next week or two. as i just got the studs done last week for added security of running 55-60lbs boost.

You don't need to change gears. Try a SPS62/80 and drive a little faster. You will see lower EGT's and keep the RPM in the comfort range. Pulling steeper grades will be better. Better yet a Silver 62 is very cool. I pull with a Silver Bullet and would never go down or anywhere else. I call it performance towing. My truck is a 04. 5 Dodge 6 Speed.

I'm hoping to stick with the turbo I have.

Basically I am going to have to pull everywhere except the interstate in 5th with my 35" tires. That is o. k. It keeps the RPM's around 22-2300.

I just wish it would run a little cooler. But it's not to the point it's dangerous. It will be 1,000 constant and that should be more then o. k.
