I own two imports in addition to my CTD. My daily driver Nissan has 259,000 miles and my wife's Camry has 184,000. Next to no trouble out of them. I love imports and will always have them.

You say you buy American. Well, hate to break it to you, but most of the time you are buying American, you are buying an imported product made in a developing Third World country. The only people that benefit from this are the high level executives who get bonuses for improving the profit margin at the expense of the hourly personnel.

At least the Japanese are making an investment in America. This investment is supporting real American families. I live close to Nissan's Tennessee plant and they are the largest employer in our area. Nissna and the companies that support Nissan are employing regular people. They are continuosly expanding and adding more jobs.

I have worked for a Japanese company and traveled to Japan. I traveled there because we were transferring a product line from Japan to the U. S. This transfer created 100 new jobs for AMERICANS.

You are picking on Toyota's engine problem and their handling of it. What about the steering problem on our Dodges and the way Dodge has handled it.

Needless to say, I am not ashamed to own an import. So I guess you are not fond of me then.

toyota is building an engine plant in jackson, tn that will bring 150 to 300 jobs to my area. i only own dodges, my dad has 2 dodges, brother drives a nissan and mom a lexus. support the people who support us is my opinion. later, nick

Hey I own a Honda 4-wheeler,IMO the best quad on the market. I'm not picking on Toyota for having problems. It's just that some people put them on a pedestal like their perfect. You always read in Consumer reports that the imports are :) and the big 3 are:( . As far as Dodges steering problems, mine had some when I put the 285's on it but a dual steering stabilizer fixed it. Stock tires no problem. Now at 80k it still steers nice and tight... Doug

The only vehicle I ever lemon lawed was an '89 Toyota. It had a CV carburetor laying on it's side. Not the best idea. It would die out on acceleration if you nailed it to get going like when traffic is coming. They gave me the run around for several months. I finally wrote with white shoe polish on the windows "*** Toyota refuses to fix this lemon". The dealership called the sheriff, they came, told the manager it was not illegal. They finally put me on the phone with Jacksonville and then California (closer to Japan) and they admitted there was a problem with the CV carburetor. The next year they used fuel injection. I haven't had a burning desire to buy another one.

Mom's Honda went through two half shafts, two a/c compressors, one LR door lock motor, one transmission, and finally a cracked head at 74,000 miles. Honda did all the maintenance on schedule. Others get 300,000 out of the death traps. Go figure.

I think they're highly over-rated as it's "in-vogue" to bash American vehicles and buy overpriced Japanese cars.

You know, I have Harleys, cummins, Honda, and yamaha. I gave up worring where they came form as long as they give me good service. I think you are right JSkyles in your views. Tim

Better check your shoes and clothing to make sure you don't have anything made outside of the US. I personally don't care where something is made. If I personally consider it well made and good value for the money and I need or want it, I buy it.

Trading goods and services with foreign countries is what keeps the economy going. If everyone felt the same way and only bought what was made in their own country, the world's economy would collapse and believe me, you would not like it.

Yes it maybe made in a different country... For example i wear clothes from abercrombie and fitch... Yes i know the clothes ARENT made here BUT the company originated in the USA. . Same with most of the other things i buy. .

XCX, I see that you won't support a company just because it is foreign. But in supporting Ambercrombie and Fitch, you will support a company that targets pornographic catalogs to teenagers. Makes perfect sense to me.

My parents bought their first Toyota in '73. The lemon yellow Celica (dealer maintained) burned two sets of valves and one water pump before it was totalled at 33K miles. The '74 Hilux pickup had holes rusted in the doors when it was sold less than 2 years later. (in Texas) Their mid '90's Camary went back on lemon law after the dealer was repeatedly unable to fix the transmission. My dad described it shifting like hitting a 55 gallon barrel with a 4 lb sledge. A late '90's T100 lost all oil pressure at about 85K miles. (dealer maintained by the book) They still own 2 Toyotas?????

I PERSONALLY owned 2 Nissans, a 4X4 pickup (160K) and a 4X4 Pathfinder(80K), and 1 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pickup(21K) before this Dodge. ALL of them ran great and were extremely well made and reliable. I am sure that they are prone to problems just like everyone else but don't get me started about some of the American made vehicles I have owned. How many K-cars do you see on the road today? "American" companies have shot themselves in the foot. The Chrysler minivan has lost it's top spot to a Japanese make. My sister-in-law has the Chrysler and they are getting ready to dump another $500 in repairs this year at 80K miles.

I hope my Dodge holds up well. So far I am very pleased with the fit, finish, and styling but I never had a vibration in my Japanese vehicles at 70mph, my rear end didn't howl, and the transmission didn't growl at low speeds. Go ahead and flame me but I guess I am a little spoiled by a quality built vehicle.

I work at a toyota dealership and the 1mz seinnas are sluging "toyota calls it gelling" from people that do do change there oil at regular service times. People think that if 5000mi oil changes are all right then why not 10000mi. Some people are retarded, but toyota is pay ing to replace the engine under a 10 yr, unlimted mileage warrenty to hold there name.

I look at every thing I buy as to where it is made. They only are building the plants here for tarrif reasons. If they were not there Dodge may be or Chevy. When you buy here more taxes are paid here and it supports local municipal functions better. I can't buy all USA but want I can I do and feel good about it. For years they do anything to exclude are goods like finished wood products. They use to change the laws for turn signals and the like so much Detroit couldn't keep up. I looked at a new Suburban and it was made in Mexico so they can keep it. I bought a Excusion built in Kentucky. I'll never see the people that built it but love looking at the sticker that's UAW made in Kentucky just like the St. Louis sticker on my Dodge. Trade is good not unfair trade. When is the last time Japs ever donated to a world diasaster in a big way with all the money they have? Sorry after watching the history channel and what they have done all over the world through the last century to the Koreans and Chinese I will avoid them when ever I can! My friends new Altima's motor went bang after 25,000 miles. I told him I was estatic that it blew up! This is the same person that said all the US cars were junk and he won't buy them. Made my year! Wonder where his two duaghters will work as jobs leave here? There 12 and 10 he can send them to college for a million bucks to get a ten dollar a day job in the global economy. Half a trillion dollar defit keep buying that crap. They target industries here and dump there goods. Dumping is easy to spot the goods are cheaper here than their own market like they did with steel for years. Glad there enconomy is in the dumps for over ten years and there banking system is the joke of the world. The chinese join WTO but follow none of the rules and flucuate the money value to suit thier trading. Wake up trade fair and enforce the rules not these half assed NFTA agreements. You like you health benefits kiss them good-bye because 35% of corporate America said the dumping them in the next few years. Go to a national health plan and let companies shed that cost like they do in other countries. I love my Red Wing boots and my Carhart clothes and my socks made here with my New Balance sneakers made in Mass. I like my Gear wrenches made by Craftsman even though they cost 30+ dollars more than the other Gear Wrench brand right next to it them. I'll wait longer and do with less if I must. They just feel better in MY hand. When I buy floppies I buy Imation because there made here. Go to HOWTOBUYAMERICAN.com do some reading. Walmarts founder was buy American he died now look what they turned it into. Sorry for the rant now I'm going to hold something made in The USA and be happy. Even if I buy something from Bangeladesh at least they need some help not the JAPS.

Well , I went to the links that are posted in the first post on this thread. . It seems to me that people don't like to change their oil often enough. . They are haveing problems , then crying about Toyota. . You can call me nuts , but I always change oil at 3000 miles . . And that happens on any vehicle I own. . I have A 1988 Olds Ciera that has cleen oil at every oil change, and it has 155,000 miles on it now. . I would like to believe that people will get A long life out of any engine , if the oil is changed often enough. . That goes for Jap cars or any American made vehicle. . I always change oil on my Cummins at 3000 miles , even know its still clean with all highway miles. . Because of this , no one will ever see me compaining about "gelling" problems. . I firmly believe "most " problems can be related to A vehicles maintenence history. .

I've owned three Toyota vehicles, two trucks and one 4Runner. The trucks, a 1982 and a 1991, each got 100,000 miles with no problems before I sold them. The 1993 4Runner started to knock at 60,000 miles. Toyota pulled it apart and said that it was piston slap caused by fouled rings which were caused by lack of maintenance, (oil changes). They said the extended warranty would not cover it because of this. I immediately pulled all my receipts showing that I had changed the oil consistently at 3,500 mile intervals since new. They then backtracked and said it was probably due to bad gasoline and fixed it with no more arguements. If I didn't have those receipts I would have been SOL for a $4,500 dollar repair bill. My advice, keep all your receipts and a good maintenance log.

the way i see it, if you are STUPID enough to not check your oil once in 9000 miles, you deserve to loose your engine!!!!!!!!

i dont care what engine or vehicle you have, if you dont check your oil every 1000 miles, you are asking for the trouble that that idiot had.

the heck with gelling and all the rest. i have an 89 turbo caravan that uses a quart every 500 miles or so. it has done it almost from the day it was new. it now has 90,000 + miles and the engine runs fine and oil is cheap.

plain and simple answer to that problem.

jim

Some of it may be due to operater error. But it's not just Toy owners that don't keep up on maintenence. It just sounds like toyota believes their own hype TOO much, and trys to sweep problems like this and others under the rug:rolleyes: and blame someone else. I've owned mostly Mopars all of my life and never really had enough problems to switch. I don't subsribe to Consumer Reports either. They like to slam anything that's not an import econo-box:mad: ...
