Have no fear. The wrong part is here.

Yup. It's the wrong part. Dang! I thought it was too good to be true. Anyway, the part Fritz has listed is the crank position sensor, not the throttle position sensor. I'll get you guys the right part number in the morning along with a price.

Oy!

Found the part number. It's Cummins part # 3937162. It costs around $350. :--) Fritz, can you please make the change on your site so I don't do this again?;)

Anyway, I think I'm gonna try some other stuff quick before I jump right out there and buy one of these thingys. Like the dielectric grease on the sensor connections. Hopefuly that works. (finger crossed)

Seems to be fixed

OK all, I put a brand new Comp box on, thanks to an understanding dealer. I also put dielectric grease on all the connections for the box. The problem seems to have gone away, so it was either one or the other. I'm happy again!Oo. :D

Good luck everyone. -Ron

APPS change

I just finished replacing the APPS and my results and story follow. For awhile I've had two problems that I think where both related to this part. For about a year I've had intermittent problems with the T/C not staying in lockup. I'd found temporary success by disconnecting the batteries for an hour or so and it seemed to work for awhile. I've also been annoyed by a stumble/miss that was most pronounced when going downhill with partial throttle (not accelerating but enough throttle to have T/C lockup) and if you really paid attention you could feel it on the freeway in unaccelerated/steady speed. Over the past yr and a half I've noticed this becoming more pronounced but, for example, a passenger that had never ridden in my truck would never notice. I've also taken the APPS unit off and cleaned/greased the electric plug in hopes of a better connection. That never seemed to make much difference. Experimenting, I would disconnect my VA box and the symptoms would almost go away but I could still notice a stumble. Over the summer I've kept track of the threads on this subject (built a house and moved so not much posting, etc) and this past week took a chance, after compiling some other information from Carrington Dodge in Morgan, UT that installed my DTT setup, and I sprung for the APPS (for $379. 21 w/tax) from Cummins Intermt. in Reno. With that amount of cash I was anxious about the results and I can tell you that it cleared up all the above problems and I've noticed a smoother throttle response and I'm convinced that this was the part giving me the problem. I also wonder how much this could impact mileage. I've never been one to track mileage all the time but I will try to assess the impact this part change would have on mpg in the next few weeks as I have a couple trips scheduled w/24' trailer this month. I'm happy that my $380 wasn't "throwing parts at the problem". A gamble that has paid off. The 24v manual spells out a simple calibration after initial install and that's it for replacing this part. It worked for me, so far, and I feel it was money well spent. I probably could've done it on warranty but I'm so close to 100K that I didn't even try to deal w/the dealer on this one. I'm just glad I'm rolling smooth again. I hope this helps some one as I was very frustrated and bummed out with my truck. Now I'm going to wash it again since the wx is alittle warm. That's my story. Hope it helps some one with their problem. :p

APPS 98.5 part#

For those interested an early 98. 5 24v APPS part# 3937161 . Was not a stocked part here, not one with alot of demand unlike the lift pumps. I just hope that tomorrow's trip provides the same results.

It's located just in front of your intake horn. It's the assembly with the three bolts holding it on the top of the engine. The linkage is under the plastic cover and the sensor is on the back side of the linkage. Hope this helps.
