i have a 98 12 valve. the fifth gear fell out and ruined the trans. im going out west in a couple weeks and was wondering if a NV5600 will bolt in or is there an adapter that i need to make it work. also where would be the best place to find a 4500 or 5600 used or new. thanks for the help. Ethan.

Bummer, 5th gear falling off doesn't usually cause much damage. The 5600 will bolt in with factory parts. A G56 bolts in with just a couple of custom parts, too bad you're taking a trip sooner than you would be able get it all together.

Car-part.com will search salvage yards to locate any part you're looking for. If Atlas Auto in Pasadena TX has what you need DON'T go there...

it isnt completely junk but there are a ton of shavings in it. and me going to wyoming im just gona change the clutch and tranns. so the 6spd will bolt in and the transfer case will bolt up to. i dont mean to bombard u with questions im just wanna make sure.

Everything bolts in. Just make sure you get the clutch and driveshaft to match your new transmission (cab & bed length too for driveshaft).

It will be a bolt up to the NV5600. You'll have to lengthen the front driveline, shorten the rear, swap the clutch and flywheel, and modify your exhaust bracket. They use the same cross member, transfer case etc.

There are two styles of cross members. You need the wider cross member off the newer trucks. It has two spots to mount up to, one for the 4500, and a long one for the 5600.

You might want to rethink going to the NV5600. Parts and transmissions are in short supply. Standard Transmission won't send out a rebuild without receiving a core. There is only one extra step to install a G56, which is modding the crossmember. In addition, a G56 gives you two gear ratio options. If you have TDR issue 69 there is a how to do it article, or you can read about it here. https://www.turbodieselregister.com...on-1994-1998/221115-mission-g56-pictures.html

How many miles on yours Gary ?

I've put 52k on it so far. I was told it had 57k on it when I bought it, but I never saw the donor truck.

I strongly recommend getting a rebuilt NV4500. I have been happy with Standard Transmission & Gear of Fort Worth, TX. The NV5600 and the later G56 are heavier, bigger, longer, and subject to limited parts availability. They are more expensive to rebuild, and the G56 has not enjoyed the reputation for durability that the New Venture transmissions have. You are getting into cost and time issues to attempt a conversion to a six speed. The durability questions of the NV4500 were worked out long ago and it is a good transmission. Standard can supply one with the upgraded fully-splined main shaft to prevent fifth gear from coming off, and with an iron tail housing that won't crack.
