Truck Bed Storage / False Floor

Well, I have done searches and haven't quite found what I want. I am interested in a false floor / storage system for my truck. What I am asking from all of you is if you would be interested in a 'group buy' of a product if it was designed well and priced accordingly.



My plan is to have a local company who builds the majority of the tool boxes for the largest heavy duty truck manufacturer in America. Please understand that this would be full aluminum and extremely well made. If I get them to participate, I will then give them the exposure that at that time they would deserve. I will ask them if they would be interested in designing such a system and selling it to everyone who is interested based on the response I get here.



As a result, can you please do the following if you are interested:



1. What would you like to see in this system (height, # of storage bins, if you want slideable drawers, etc. )

2. Price range you would be willing to pay

An interesting idea. Sort of like what the Honda Ridgeline has with the in-bed storage compartment?

The biggest issue I see is reinforcing the bed sufficiently so you don't lose any cargo capacity.

The other thing is, where's the under-bed volume going to come from? For those of us who don't carry a spare tire under the bed, there's a HUGE space that could be used to house the bin.

But if you want to keep the spare, I'm not sure there's anywhere else under the bed where a bin of sufficient volume could be positioned and not interfere with the fuel tank, shocks, or driveshaft.

I am sorry, I know I didn't explain it very well. What I meant was something that goes on top of the bed. So, if the depth of the bed where you put your cargo is 2. 5 ' high and the false floor is 1 foot off the bed, you would have 1. 5' of cargo height available...

False floor:

I built one simular to what you are describing out of 3/4" plywood, 2x6s and screws. I built it flush with the top of the wheelwells,using the stock ledges in front and back of the wheelwells to support the 2/6s side to side and the plywood perpendicular, front to back over the top of the wheelwells. It was surprisingly strong. I hauled two full dress Harley Davididsons ( over 800 lbs ea. ) for several years with this set-up.

Later on I added another piece of plywood with a small ( 3" tall) perimeter fence around it that I could slide under the false floor like a big drawer.

A pleasant surprise was having the additional flat floor space.

Cutting everything tight to the bed, I could R&R it easily and only used four fasteners into the body.

Something like this in metal I would definitely be interested in for my current truck.

I saw one of these at May Madness 2000, very nice, the owner had the cab pinstriped to match the seam that the bed doors made.

This is exactly what I was thinking, thanks for sending this. I just didn't want to spend that much, thought we could do it for cheaper. Since I didn't get enough replies of interest, I think I will just try the wood approach and see how it works.
