We have towed all over the western US with an extended hitch. I replaced the stock hitch with a heavier duty unit, the best I could buy, then I made an extension 24" long out of 2" solid steel with the ball mounted on the end. Towed a 3 horse slant load trailer with 2 horses in it, and also towed our car trailer with our Jeep on it through Colorado several times. Always with no sway or sag, and straight as an arrow. Our camper was an Elkhorn 9-1/2' with a slide out, so it was a heavy camper, too. Did it this way with F350 Fords, one a single rear wheel, the other a dually, both diesels. I reccomend the dually. Good luck.
