I'm in Knoxville TN and believe that my VP is on it's way out (maybe already there). It's at the dealership right now waiting on the news (should know something this afternoon). One day about a year ago, I saw about 3psi on the fuel pressure gauge and it then it dropped to 0 a few seconds later it went back up to 6 and I got to work. I took it to the dealer that morning (again with about 6psi), they replaced the pump. For a while there was no problem. Several months ago, the truck started falling on it's face at about 2000rpm, like I had just pulled my foot of the pedal. It would only do this every once in a while. Yesterday, it seemed like the truck didn't want to drive anywhere in the 1900-2100 rpm range. I was able to get it to the dealer driving in 5th gear. I'm pretty sure that I will be replacing the VP44. I checked the codes and nothing has been set. The truck has a little over 92k on it. I may be able to get a pump at cummins cumberland. Anyone around me have a service manual (Todd?) for a 2001 and want to get a little dirty this weekend?

idiots

I got a call from the idiots at the dodge dealership. They said that it is the clutch. I don't know about any of you, but in my experience when a clutch is failing, the engine races when you are trying to accelerate, the truck doesn't fall on it's face. I told him there was NO WAY that it could be a problem with the clutch. He we on to tell me that they could replace it for $3050 :--) I told them that if the clutch needed to be replaced, I would replace it with a LUK clutch and he had the nerve to tell me that they could use whatever parts I supplied and I would just have to pay the labor.

I drove it all weekend without a problem. The stumbling (falling on it's face) has been intermittent for several months. I took it to a different dealer several months ago and they couldn't recreate the problem. This time it happened while the tech was driving it and they mis-diagnosed it and I still had to pay the dang diag fee.

I'm leaning toward the APPS and not the VP44... .

I agree that it does not sound like a clutch to me. It sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Unfortunately, I can't help you beyond that since I don't know much about 24V motors. Good luck getting it fixed.

I would guess VP44. When my 99 had the VP44 issue, it was hard start, but there are other symptoms and this could be one of them. If you know a reputable Diesel shop, you might take it there instead of a dealer. My '99 never set a code when the VP44 was dying.

Good luck.

one more thing I forgot, when this happens, it seems like the engine just goes to an idle, it doesn't stop running. the fuel pressure goes back to where it is when I'm idling (the reading comes from between the filter and the VP44, at the bottom of the filter). I can usually floor the accelerator and after a second or two, it will start accelerating pretty hard, with plenty of boost.

it had cleared up for a shor twhile after I picked it up from the dealer, but started again last night. the check engine light finally came on. I checked the codes and saw a p0122 and p1693. looks like the APPS to me...

I just put one in my truck ,98. 5 24v 5 speed, It would dead pedal fall on its face at low rpms after extended time at highway speed. The truck now idels about 150 rpm less and is quiter, doesnt stall out. Seemed to fixed everthing . I had gone to a dealer and cummins and it was a mystry to them even with the codes I had. But I got some good advise from a guy on here who just knows what to do with these trucks from his own exp. you have to buy the whole bell crank . I got mine at wayland chrysler in Wayland MI. It was about 374. 00. . I am amazed everday at the Seemingly unending level of stupidity that takes place in just about all routine transactions. Ever notice how some of the most knowledgable people especially on this websight are able to use common sense and expireance to do things that engineers in multi million dollar facilities cant do. Latly I seem to encounter conmen and idiots about 4 out of 5 of the places I contact for goods and services. Most of these people have had exstensive training in there feild yet most act dumber than any dog (with the exception of a toy poodle ) Iv ever had. Well best of luck ,hope you dont need a Vp44 anytime soon

me, too.

like I said, the first time I took in, they couldn't recreate the problem. then when it was happening pretty consistently, a different service department (closer to the house) said that it was the clutch. what kind of mechanic thinks that a slipping clutch will cause the engine to slow down when trying to accelerate?

it's now back at the first dealership that's closer to work to hear what they say

Chris,

I was having a very similar problem about a year ago on my 01. I replaced the LP and then went on a long road trip (2500 miles). During the trip the truck would run fine, then run like s**t. Finally made it home and found that apparently because the LP had been weak, the VP had gone to h*ll. That in turn caused my ecm to fail. I was very lucky as only had 99,883 miles on it so the second dealer I took it to, replace all under warranty. I won't even get into the first dealer but suffice it to say the diesel "techs" at that dealer and yours must be related... BTW, I had tried the APPS reset several times and was really leaning towards that but the dealer said it was fine and so far it has been... Good Luck

Bill

dealer says that it's the APPS. Wants $650 to fix it... I found a TDR member that has a new one for my model. We'll see if it works.

this morning I did the battery disconnect, reconnect, ign. on, pedal to the floor slowly, back up slowly, ign. off, start truck thing. I've been driving most of the afternoon without any problems. We'll see if that fixes it. That wiped out the 0122 code, but the 1693 is still in there. Any ideas on how to get it out?
