A friend of mine has a '97 that decided not to run. He filled up with fuel and on the way home it started studdering. A few days later he started it and went to leave and it just died and now will not start.

No fuel coming out of injector lines when cranking. cracking the fuel return banjo bolt on the pump shows the lift pump (LP) is working. although it will gush out when you pump the LP by hand and will run out slower when cranking the motor. No start when pumping the LP by hand when cranking either. Pump is turning when cranking motor.

I've looked up older threads with the same symptoms but no one seems to list there cure once they get the truck running. so I've found nothing that has helped.

Any idea's what to look for or check?

His truck: '97, CC, 5spd, 215 pump, His motor has about 20K miles on a rebuild. Lift pump was replaced at motor rebuild.

Thanks

If you are getting more fuel out of the fuel return line banjo by pumping I would say you have a weak lift pump. But I would do the same test at the fuel fliter.

But then again no fuel at injector while cranking would point to a bad injector pump.

You need to check your fuel pressure. If it is really low you may have a failed overflow valve. Email me at -- email address removed -- for my write up on the fuel supply system, how it works and how to fix it.

Check your fuel solenoid to make sure it's pulling up. Turn key to run then go out and left the solenoid by hand, it should stay up. Try starting it while it's in this state. If it starts you have a problem some place in this system. It could be the solenoid burned out or a relay problem or problems in the wiring. I have also seen a couple solenoids including mine that have worn and come apart in the flex joint. Mine came apart in Indiana so I removed it and wired the lever up until I got home to Utah and replaced the part.

Thanks for the replys/thoughts.

I forgot to mention we did check the solinoid. It is working correclty.

My first thought when he told me it started studdering was 'fuel filter' or 'water in fuel'. But after seeing no fuel coming out the injector lines when cracking them makes me think pump. I also forgot to mention that I beleave the pump has about 350K plus miles on it.

Is there any thing to look for in the pump for movement or non-movement?

Thanks for the link Joe, I'll forward it to the victum. :-laf
