My TST is showing it's age. Display went dark and more and more often, it's throwing a crank position sensor code, which its done since new but now I'm seeing the tach drop and even the eng stumbled a couple of times. I've always kept it on 2/2. I don't abuse my truck - mostly want power for towing. I'm done doing mods and I will not be adding anymore power.

Rather than fixing the TST, I'm thinking of getting a Smarty Jr. but I have a couple of questions.

I take it the Jr. does not increase rail pressure beyond factory limits?

I hate smoke. I would probably be running the Smarty on level 1, 40HP. Will it smoke?

Is 40 or 70 HP considered the "tow" setting"?

Would the Edge be a better choice?

Thanks,

Scotty

It took a long time for me to drop my TST, even after owning the Smarty for a couple of years, Ask Bob W :-laf.

The latest Smarty software is so superior over the earlier versions, that its hard to believe it's the same product. If you buy a Smarty JR, I am sure you will like it very much.

I wouldn't attribute the engine stumble and tachometer drop to the TST by default... the harness could be failing... my truck was doing the same, removed the TST and EZ, still stumbled intermittently, the cause was loose cross tubes.

By the way, my TST is still connected and resting in my ashtray, just turned off.

Cross tubes are another term for injector supply lines (I think) and I've been afraid to retorque them given how sensitive they are. Maybe I should give it a try - maybe I should even replace the known trouble maker tubes, 4 & 6 .
Still curious about smoke though.

The cross/connector tubes are the tubes that go through the head and meet the injector body, the injector lines are connected to them. If they get out of torque(37ft lbs) they leak where they meet the injector body, if they leak enough to drop rail pressure, your injector solenoids will not be commanded to fire, thus the stumble. You cannot see the leak, it travels through a passage in the head to a return line at the back of the head.

The Smarty can raise rail pressure, your choice. I would pick it over the Edge. I believe, not sure, sw#1 on the JR timing only.

Smarty Jr level 2 (70 hp) is tow setting. Yes, it will smoke at that level, but only until boost builds up, then very little. Unless of course the updates are different from last year, when I switched to Smarty Sr.

I run my Jr on #2 tow setting and I've only seen it smoke once and that was when I really jumped on it. My normal driving is much easier. I have a 30# boost gauge and limit my throttle foot to keeping boost on the gauge.

So Jess, are your saying I can't use the Smarty's 70 HP tow setting without the rail pressure running above Bosch max specs? I'm just worried about the longevity of my CP3 & injectors. .

Thanks everyone for your input,

Scotty

The Smarty is sounding better and better. Just getting the tangle of TST junk off my eng would be a big plus and the 40 or 70HP setting sounds perfect.
Last question (maybe :)) - should I take off the boost elbow and install the stock part for the Smarty?
