What is the difference in an HX35 and an HY35? The HY is for an auto, so I thought. There are a few HX35's on e-bay but they claim they came off of an automatic. Are these guys dumb or do they know something I don't?

The HY is specifically for the Autos on the 2nd gens, and IIRC they have a smaller turbine for emissions reasons on the '01 and '02.

So... 94 to 00 may very well have had an HX on the autos.

HY's are the later version and smaller turbine housing. IIRC, those are a 9 cm housing where most of the HX's are 12 cm. Pre 2000 or 2001 they were designated HX for all transmisisons.

So would a pre 2000 HX fit a 2001 w/ manual trans?

Yep, it'll fit.

Should fit fine unless the band clamps have changed to a different style in that period.
