While driving home last week I heard a strange blast and looked in the rear view mirror and could only see white smoke like the foggiest day you have ever seen. Pulled up on the side of the road and as I switched off, I heard a grinding noise coming from the turbo. Towed the truck home, pulled the aircleaner duct off the turbo and found a nut that was supposed to be on the fan laying on the bottom of the housing. The blades are trashed as well as the exhaust side. A few days prior I found a tear in the right side boot that leads to the inner cooler and commented to a friend that with my luck and all the dirt inside the system I would not be surprised if the turbo bearings dried up..... of course I was just kinda joking..... but . . well its history now.

My question is what to go with for $500 or less. Also what other damage could be caused from this episode?? Could there be metal pieces from the blades scattered anywhere??

Thanks in advance.

Cheers derek

Would be better to remove the intercooler, and reverse flush it with water. Might not be a bad idea to remove the intake manifold cover, and lok to see if any are sitting in the intake runner. Ther cooler will catch most (or all) of it most of the time. Not always though.

I see you don't have gauges yet. With your mods, get them on ASAP! Pyrometer at minimum. Could be why you took out the turbo. My guess is, that the exhaust temps were very hot (partularly if you shutdown hot) and ruined the turbo on the turbine side first. Then, there was enough movement for the turbine and compressor wheels to make housing contact, that wipe it out. Been through that with my boss' brother several times. He always comes into the yard, and doesn't let the turbo and engine cool off before shutting down. Cokes the oil in the turbo bearings, and wipes them out.

A #10 plate in 215 pump is a LOT more fuel than my 180 pump would push with the same plate. You are gonna have to spend more than $500 on a turbo suitable for your power level.

Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and bought a hx35 from a fellow member and also got a 16cm non wastegate housing. Hopefully this will help with lower egt's. I have had the guages finally sent on monday as they were out of stock on the pillar mount. After taking the turbo apart, I was amazed to find that there was not a single part salvagable. There were cracks in both housings and from the looks of it the shaft broke first and the rest just went ape. I will take the intercooler off tomorrow and flush it with water and follow up with a huge shop vac.

Thanks again Derek
