Yesterday was the first time I put a big load on my truck. When I was pulling I noticed a difference in the sound of the turbo under boost. When cruising the interstate under full boost (for me the stupid wastegate opens at 18 psi) I noticed the turbo had lower pitch to it rather than the usual high "I'm hauling butt" sound. Has anyone noticed a difference in the sound of their turbo before whether under a load or otherwise?

Thanks,

I can't say if that is normal or not . . but anytime you think the turbo doesn't sound right, check all the intercooler boots and clamps, just to be on the safe side.

I have never towed heavy yet, but when I get on it fairly hard, I also notice a bit of a deeper sound from my turbo than I hear when I just lightly hit the pedal. It isn't overwhelmingly loud, but it is enough to be noticeable.

Do you see the boost jump up pretty high after a second or so? If not, you should likely check all your intercooler boots and hoses, as was already suggested.

My understanding is that the turbo will actually sound louder under heavy load, not quieter. You are working your engine harder therefore producing a greater amount of exhaust gas which powers the turbocharger. It turns faster and creates more boost.

I'm all about the turbo whistle, and many guys on here have reported the turbo whistle being "unbearable" (as if it could be :D) under heavy loads, especially with their silencer ring out. So if you're hearing a quieter whistle, I would do as the others have suggested and check your connections. If you have a 2WD truck that sits fairly low to the ground your boot has a chance of getting "knocked off" every now and then. Used to happen all the time with our pulling truck.

Hope you get it worked out.

Silencer ring? That got lost the 1st day I bought my truck. Now I have a B1 and thank goodness it didn't come with a wimpy silencer ring :D
