Update to my post yesterday.....

After completing the Fluidamper install, it's the fan pulley that will prevent a belt change without removing the damper. There's around 1/8" clearance at that point. So I went ahead and put a fresh belt in it, and if my first one is any indication, it will go for 6 years easy. At least I confirmed the HB can be pulled without removing the fan or shroud.

IAII, the Cummins part number for the HB bolts is 3903857.

Blachsheepdiesel:You mentioned you torqued the dampener bolts to 92#. Where did you get this number? Is this the same as 32# + 60 degrees? Thanks for any info you can give. Bill

Bill,

All the info I found said that 92 ft lbs = 32 ft lbs plus 60 degrees. They are large bolts and I can't see 92 ft lbs being too much.

Godspeed,

Trent

Isn't there something someplace about turning it until it squeaks? :)

Honestly I don't think it's all that critical. I used the shop manual method (32+60 degrees) but it's not like we're crushing a gasket or anything else sensitive.

Blacksheep: When I did my install I used the 32# + 60 deg. I checked

the bolts yesterday - set the TQ wrench to 106#. The bolts are tighter than that. Don't why in the H--- Dodge cant just give a TQ number. At 92# I know the bolts are plenty tight.

Sounds like an interesting topic. I think I'll follow along until I have something intelligent to say. Please don't hold your breath. ;)

Update:

Pulled a 40' fifth wheel from northern Indiana to Texas via MO and OK. Did the edge of the paper test on the gear shift a few times and again found no vibration like used to exist before installing the 6. 7 harmonic balancer. The engine is extremely smooth which can be partly attributed to fresh rebuilt injectors that were balanced on a test stand. There is really no drone while towing but I didn't have much anyway since installing the Donaldson muffler. This truck has 4. 10 gears so the engine runs at 2100 rpm at 65 mph, which always seemed the worst rpm for drone before the new muffler.

I cannot emphasize enough that if you have a manual transmission truck the 6. 7 harmonic balancer will make a big difference in vibration in the drive line.

Godspeed,
Trent

Update:

Anyone with a South Bend clutch knows what sounds the clutch makes at idle with clutch pedal released. After installing the 6. 7 damper I can no longer hear that noise.

Godspeed,
Trent

I've ordered my damper and pulley even though I probably won't get them on til the spring. Shad
