The tank is done!

The local guy, Craig, did a great job. I got the tank this afternoon.

I asked Craig to save the cut-off piece for me, and I measured the fuel quantity that I lost. It works out to right about 3. 5 gallons. I was beginning to worry as I poured more bottles of water into it, thinking that it might amount to 4 gallons, and I wasn't too far off. Somehow, 3. 5 gallons sounds much better though.

Craig's dad is the one who handed me the tank, so I don't have contact data for Craig yet. (I need to get permission from him. ) I expect, though, that there will soon be another source for fuel tank welding. Craig is near Cincinnati, and will be more convenient for many members than Red in Tulsa.

Garrett, did you get in touch with Red? Any luck there? If he can't help you, maybe Craig can.

US Gear Install

Loren,

Didn't have time to call yet. I'll have to wait until Monday. If you can post some pictures I'd like to see your modified tank. Also if Craig is willing to help I would like his number too.

Garrett

Garrett,

No pictures yet, although I'm working trying to get help from my wife, plus the use of her digital camera.

As I said, I'm really happy with the work that Craig did. He is in business with his dad, Gene, as a plastics fabricator. Gene said that they would take these jobs, so we (truck owners) now have a second source for getting the tanks welded. The data is:

Plastic Fabrication and Repair

P. O. Box 64

14 South High Street

Martinsville, OH 45146

Phone: 937-685-2164

Contacts: Gene or Craig Bartlett

Martinsville is close to Cincinnati, in southwestern Ohio.

I just got the whole thing bolted up and the transfer case is now 11 - 5/8 inches farther to the rear. I did not use the rear adaptor plate as instructed. Using it would have required removal of the studs on the transfer case, and it was much simpler to just bolt it up. My truck is a 2000, six-speed with the standard (for diesels) 241HD transfer case. Your application may require the second adaptor plate. If so, the whole thing will be 3/4 inch longer than mine.

I see from your profile that you have the five-speed. I haven't heard of anyone with a five-speed needing to shorten the tank. Have you checked yourself, or are you taking someone's word for this? You may want to send a personal message to "BPine" on this forum. He has a five-speed and a USGear overdrive.

Anyway, if you absolutely need to get your tank cut. You now have two outfits to choose from.

Hooray!! The previous photo shows the tank with the cut-off end. The end piece has a piece of the 3/4" plate welded to it. I expect that Craig used it as a test to see how to set up his welder.

Here is another photo with a closer view of the welds.
