Hey guys.

Is there anything special about the key that splines the VE to the drive gear. I ruined mine and am trying to source another one. Any part numbers?

Michael

ANY local injection shop should have them. If not, let me know and I can get one down here. You may even be able to get one from a hardware store. It's just a woodruf (sp?) key. BTW how did yours get ruined? ;)

Daniel

Hardware store or auto parts like Pepboys. I'm amazed by the stuff they have in those bins, wingnuts, washers, pins, cotter keys, shaft keys. Bolts, sae and metric. :--) Did it fall in the gears?

By the way, the newer engines don't even use keys on the pump shaft. Just make sure the shaft and gear are clean and dry (brakleen!) and torque it down!

Well, thats proving to be a problem. You think you live in BFE, I have not been able to find and injection pump shop within 75 miles of here. I know I could get one from Des Moines, probably will just do that.

How did it get ruined? Well, even trained and experianced professionals like myself make mistakes, You'd think a guy that swings wrenches for a living every day could put a pump back on without boggering up the key. It was not quite lined up with the keyway, and I started pulling it together with the nut. I was being a little impatient.

And Pete, I will make sure it gets a key, you should search the 2nd gen forums and read how many posts there are about the P-pumps slipping timing. I'm not going down that road. ;)

Thanks for the part number Dave, that will make aquiring one over the phone that much easier. Got a part number for the mounting gasket too? I guess since I've got to get a key, I just as well get a gasket.

Michael

Michael,

Have you tried any of the diesel repair shops in the area? I know Centre State between Middletown and West Burlington is a decent size shop for different makes and they used to have a Cummins sign out there too. Ruan in MP may have one too.

Hope this helps,

Ben

Dont forget CaseIH, thogh I wouldnt recommend you taking the service truck in there :D Have them look up the stuff for a 580E backhoe- 4 cylinder B series.

Daniel

Micheal, if you go to the Case dealer, tell them 621 loader, same year and engine in our trucks. Where do you think I get my parts? At work!

Either Ag or CE stores can look this up.

The backhoes only have 4bt's in them.

you have a mopar dealer near bfe? try part#4429332 list$2. 10. plenty of stock available.

it amazes me as a mopar parts guy how hard some people will work to avoid the dealer

Here's a trick I use with keys and keyways... (when I remember to do it. . )

Make a little "ding" in the keyway with a punch and hammer..... then tap the key in and it will stay in during assembly.

Them rookies!!!

I'll remember that the next time you call me for help on your Getrag :p If this key is the only costly mistake I make, I'll be a happy man. At least I don't have to pull my fuel tank back down cause the new fuel line quit sucking up fuel, Mr Big Fuel Filter. :-laf

As many Dodge dealers that I have dealt with, have little to no diesel experiance, don't have parts for trucks older then 2001, and charge through the teeth, its no suprise to me. I happily drive a truck that everybody wants to forget about, especially most dodge dealers I've been to. I just happen to forget about them when its time to get parts. Thank you for the part number, and I am glad there is a good Mopar Parts man here on board. I just wish when I walked into a Dealership, I wouldn't have to look the part up for the guy, because he has no idea about anything but Neons, Hemis, and Minivans.

FWIW, I've been running so hard since SOP, with work, and farming that I have not had any time to even call any of the places recommended.

Ben, I have not tried the two you asked about. I did call Southern Iowa Diesel in Ottumwa, and they did not have a key or gasket. Morning Sun Farm Implement sold there gasket they had on hand, and did not have a key either.

Thanks for the PM Daniel.

I hope to have enough time to work on the truck this week, so I can wheel it Sunday maybe.

Michael

I used to attempt to obtain seemingly simple parts from the local dealerships for the Cummins and they have absolutely no clue. The only method... ... . and do mean ONLY method... ..... is to have the dealership part number in hand when calling. Without that, you are up the creek and again, they have no clue.

Body parts seem to be different. They know what the electric lock actuator is, so I'm led to believe they do not have a breakdown of the engine parts in which to look up the part numbers. However not all dealers are alike. I hear through the grape vine, some dealerships seem to "know" the Cummins engine. None in my area do.

This is why many go out of the way to avoid the dealership.

BTW, the key does have a dimple so it fits extra tight. If it's been removed, them it's a bit loose if you don't re-dimple. ;)

yeah, i guess i'm being a little concieted. i know most parts guys wont spend the time to find the little parts. the way most of us get paid now guys dont want to do what they feel is a waste of effort for the money made. i just a really rare parts guy who really enjoys what i do, and drive what i sell parts for. it honestly only took me 2 minutes to find the number, get the price, and check national availability. then again i have looked at every single page in the catalog for a 93 ram :) .

the suprising part to me is how many parts are still available for our trucks(not trim and such, but hard parts). so when i see these kind of post, i'll do my best to give you a part# and price so at least when you approach the lazy honda driving guy behind the mopar counter, you'll be prepared

added: the guy that works the counter with me knows nothing about diesels and very little about gas burners. he could be selling oven parts and be just as happy

I believe our local dealerships are required by-law to hire used car sales people to operate the counter

Auto parts stores are worse (outside the NAPA) :-{} They only employ college students and most of them ride scooters :-laf
