Is there any place other than the dash tag that would have the truck's VIN number? I recently sold my '98 club cab to a guy and since the VIN tag is missing he's having trouble licensing it. I noticed it was missing a few months ago and hoped it wouldn't be an issue but unfortunately it is.

I thought the VIN tag was pretty well secured to the dash there at the base of the windshield on the driver side. The only thing I can think of is four years ago when I put a dash-mount gauge set in I loosened the dash and pulled it away from the windshield a few inches so I could more easily route the wiring. Maybe it came loose and fell in there at that time. Would be a PITA to try and fish it out especially 4 years later, and would hate to see the new owner go through that for something I might have caused. Would help if the truck wasn't hundreds of miles away now.

Thanks, Vaughn

Only speculation at this point, but a competent Dodge dealer might be able to use the Engine Serial Number and find the VIN by inquiring into the warranty claims history, that info is tied together somewhere in the system.

I know I can in the Daimler Truck System but don't know if the Dodge system can handle such a request.

Big stuff also has a VIN stamped on the frame but have never had to find out on a pick-up.

My '98 has the VIN on the sticker on the underside of the hood and on the stamped metal option code plate that's attached to the front of the core support on the passenger side, in addition to the sticker on the driver's side door.

Also there is one on the fire wall (engine side). Very hard to find though. That's where we look on burned down vehicles.

along with the above suggestions, as I recall from auto theft school it is stamped on the transmission/or trans cross member (only helps if original trans), should be somewhere on the bottom of the engine block maybe, firewall, back of glove box should be a federal safty tag that has it.

I'm off work for a couple weeks, if you still need suggestions I can pull out my vin book when I get back and tell you several other "hidden/top secret" spots.

In Ohio, you be better off to dig it out of the dash, because "that VIN, is the important one". They might let you reinstall it on a new dash, if they've already seen it. Other than that you'll be applying for a new VIN, and you don't want to do that. He might have to get lawyer, unless he knows a judge.
