Has anyone EXCEPT the dude on youtube (moparecodiesel) had a press fit cam gear failure on the VM? I don't know many people that have any significant mileage nor do I know anyone that has had any serious problems. More curious than anything.

Supposedly there is a company in Utah "Bulletproofing" the VM and they don't say or describe what they do on their website........kinda suspicious.

I have not seen or heard about that failure. The guy in the video also mentioned valves lodging in the piston, not so sure that would happen since the rocker arms are designed to break when a chain type failure occurs.I also find it interesting that he has the FCA training manuals

Pretty sure that TDR member Todd who runs TC Diesel has experienced this failure of the ecodiesel. Furhtermore, while I do NOT know for sure, I would;t be at all surprised if he was the guy behind the moparecodiesel site. IIRC, he has always been very accessible by phone, so maybe call him for more info--

This is the link to the video. It's certainly not Todd at TCDiesel unless he changed his name to Shawn. Who ever the guy is, he likes to invent problems and solutions to imagined problems. I watched his video about the oil in the intercooler. He makes it sound horrible that the new engine has sooooooo much blow by. I wonder how much he really knows, if anything.

I believe sag2. When I am researching a purchase, or investigating an issue, he always has the right information and presents it without bias or any "cover up," or exaggeration. I would be suspicious of self-aggrandizing videos from unknown sources. Bob4x4 is also an excellent, honest contributor who has been a top tech for a long time at a high volume dealership. I am not saying the VM is flawless, just that these two members are the ones I would approach for advice if I were considering such a purchase.

I can say for sure Todd has not experienced that failure and he's definitely not the guy behind moparecodeiesel. Shawn C. is moparecodiesel and he has been banned from other ecodiesel forums due to his lack of respect. He offers much BS presented as fact. Not sure if the cam slip is even a legitimate claim.

My bad and many thanks for clarifying his lack of involvement on that site…please know that I was NOT trying to impugn Todd, just know that he has a wealth of knowledge on the ecodiesel and has been talking about some form of fairly common failure on them.

Here is the link to his comments that he added to one of my threads--

There have been a few cooler failures but I have to disagree with the repair direction some of the dealers and Star are using. They have been recommending engine replacements instead of just flushing the oil/coolant and getting the truck back on the road. If you have seen a 3.0 apart you probably do not want one spread all over the service bay in most any dealership. I always say be careful what you wish for. A little coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant can easily be cleaned with no lasting damage in most cases. There are way more down side concerns with a new engine based on the complexity of the ED. It isn't a Cummins.

Sierra West Diesel, or Moparecodiesel Whatever He calls Himself has found to be Questionable at Best, I have covered the design and believe it to be sound, Claiming every ED going to fail is just to far, Wanting to Charge $2000.00 for the Fix........My ED has been flawless to date 15K miles, the EGR is defeated 1/2 of those miles. I caught 1 customer in the very early stage of Oil exchanger failure (Took coolant sample) it was towed to Wilcox Ram and flushed R/R the exchanger. I caught another in early stages of bottom end failure Oil sample ( Ram ) wasn't to interested in engine Replacement ,Owner demanded and was willing to pay the Dealer for Pan removal and Guest what Yep New long block on order.

I do think all the bottom end / Gear shaft failures are related to production errors, The exchangers needs recall, its not a ware part and to have them failing in 2014-15 seems odd.

The engine design is robust with proper care and appropriate action taken to the EGR its a 400K+ motor.

I have a build date of 3-14 with over 1000 hours and over 51k miles of service without a single mechanical issue at all, everything is stock. I have had the usual flashes, updates, recalls and the SCR has been replaced as well. Oil and filter is changed around 8600 miles ( 15% oil life on meter ), fuel filter every other oil change and air filter every third oil change. It runs like a top.

This oil cooler thing really cranks me up. It reminds me of the 15,000 mile water pump failure in my '14 RT Durango. Absolutely unacceptable! There are lots of similar WP failures over on the Durango board. Does anyone share a feeling that this could be a bean counting issue? In that FCA is cutting corners where they shouldn't regarding the quality of materials? Am I correct in stating that this failing cooler is not an original design to the 3.0 and a revision for the Ram application? And that other 3.0 specs (like the jeep) use different a cooler without issue?

Bean counters are always at work. I have a good friend who is a retired Mopar engineer, and he relayed to me that the bean counters refer to taking something that works and cheapening it up until it doesn't as " Material Cost Management" or MCM. The engineers derisively referred to it as MCM or "Make Customers Mad". Whatever you want to call it, it is nothing short of disgusting to have super expensive vehicles felled by some mickey mouse penny-pinching.
