When I get delivery of my new Dodge, One of the first things to do is replace the gearlube in the front pumpkin with synthetic. That should help it roll a tiny bit easier, and should take the heat and foaming a little better. Amsoil man, what's your opinion? Thanks, bilford. P. S. Old School... Nice picture of a nice vehicle. I'm also from Conn. Goshen to be exact.

I plowed with the truck all winter '98, and the levels are good. Although they might be a bit low after the fluid blowing out. The breather tube outlet is under/next to the airbox on the passenger side -- so when there is foaming/blowout it runs down the inside of the fender in the engine compartment, onto and across the cross members, out the back of the wheel well, all over the bottom of the truck.

The implication by the dealer/s was they had seen quite a few that had lube blowout from the front diff breater tube; in fact it was a Cummins mechanic that originally pointed out the source (when I saw all that lube coming out of the engine compartment I pulled into the first Cummins garage I came across -- mildly panicked -- apparently I wasn't the first). Then realized the breather tube under the airbox was the source.

The front axle takes a beating plowing -- read: push snow across slippery surface then turning in reverse across a now clean piece of dry pavement (ouch). So this board has reminded me of the second thing I better get done before snow season -- time to put in the amsoil synthetics. Fritz' dynatrac front axle is in my future in a couple years. I wonder what the odds are of it getting less expensive by then?

I'd say the odds are good for a price reduction from Dynatrac,(by the interest, and the increasing numbers of CAD axle units out there) and not good for Dodge ever offering locking hubs.

Changing to synthetics would be a good idea in the front axle, and for that matter, I'll probably do it all the way around: front & rear axles, transfer case, and 5-speed. I'll probably go 10-20K first to let gears & bearings run in good (probably overkill but that's me!!) then make the switch. I don't know about recommended weights but will go with a lighter oil to reduce drag even further.

If front axle overheating is a problem couldn't you install a mag-hytec cover and synthetic oil? how much of a temp decrease do these things give?

Does anyone know WHEN you should flush your engine and differential oil and put in the Amsoil?

I thought maybe 5k would be a good place to change.

Any ideas?

Couple of things guys -- First, Mag-Hytec doesn't offer a front cover. There is not enough room with the steering linkage in the way. Also, you can switch to synthetic in your diffs as soon as possible after buying a truck. Same goes for the trans and transfer case too. Synthetics can go in all of these immediately (and that way you'll know something is in there -- see posts on low fluid levels from the factory). Only the engine should wait on the synthetics and I go with 10K for break-in before switching. There are varying opinions on this initial breakin mileage, but most agree with somewhere between 5K and 20K.

Rob,

Now that I have a VIN number, who, where do I call to track the truck being built.

I say several posts about tracking a truck trough DC, but not how and/or where.

I had this problem of fluid blowing out of the front differential while towing. The dealer tried to imply that someone had messed with the front, until I pointed out that he had been the only person to ever work on the 96' truck with 30K miles. The truck was running in two-wheel drive at the time.

Would putting synthetic in the front differential help with this problem if it is being caused by overheating?

Thanks,
Tim

BMANN... I went through the following process to track my truck(for 6 monthe and 13 days dur to it being one of the first six speeds). First of all, let me warn you that you will get very, very frustrated with this whole process.
Call DC customer service at 1-800-992-1997, then follow all of the prompts to get yopu to talk to a rep. They will have you give them the last 8 letters/numbers of your VIN. Then, they tell you what the status is of your truck. Ask them what it means... usually not much. This beats nothing, but til I made friends with one of them, I didn't know anything. Be friendly, ask their name, ask for them next time, or their extension number. Don't shoot the messenger and they will help! Good Luck!
P. S. you can also get the train car #, and track it across the country... I met mine in the Kent, WA. lot #ad
