Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Auto to 6 speed transmission

How do I go about disabling the wastegate on my truck. It's an '01 w/ auto transmission (stats in signature). I just installed my boost and EGT gauges, and am only seeing 19 lbs. of boost. At this, I can pull 1200* on my pyro no problems, which doesn't bother me, but I just don't think that the Comp (w/o pump wire hooked up) is doing all it can if the wastegate is opening on my turbo. How do I disable it?

Thanks, Josh.

u can disable it, but it would be better to just adjust it so the boost will go higher before the turbo waste gate opens. To do this u need to install a boost elbow. This is a brass elbow (1/8" NPT and 5/16" hose) fitting, i think those measurements are correct, with a allen head screw in it. This elbow restricts the boost pressure that feeds the wastegate actuator. By installing this u get more boost. U adjust the screw in for more boost. Too much boost on a small turbo can make the egt's raise as well, . . u will need the boost and egt gauge to find your sweet spot. Also a boost fooler to the map sensor may be needed, or the check engine light may stay on. The boost fooler in connected inbetween the map sencor and the connection.

I have an 01' Auto and opted to not mess with the wastegate. I have plenty of power with just the EZ and if the truck dies on the road, i can take the EZ out in 5 minutes with no tools and get towed to the dealer and not have to worry about removing the . 22 shell or any other issues.

Don't disagree with EMDDIESEL's logic here, but here is a couple of thoughts.

1. Your not going to develop your full power potential without doing something to the wastegate.

2. I have a 5 speed, but from what I've read, on this board, the turnbuckle is very easy to install and remove.

3. You don't say that your towing, but with a heavy load, I'd watch your EGT's closely. I think you might see more than 1200 degrees with a heavy load.

4. Do whatever makes you more comfortable... :D

I never tow, and i have an auto, so i am always nervous about burning it up. Since i never tow (And dont plan to) can i disable the wastegate with the . 22 shell and not risk popping the transmission?. I would like to hear this from someone who has done just that. I really wish i had gotten a 6 speed (Or a Bill K transmission!)

I have a 4" exhaust and Scotty, plus the EZ. Check my signature if you need any additional info.

That spring trick can be removed with a single snip of wire cutters.

Easy on... easy off.

It'll be good for around 29 lbs of boost.

I bet you could remove the spring faster then you could the EZ ;)

Thank you all

Well, thank you all for the great info. Tomorrow I will be investigating just how to go about putting a turnbuckle and s-hook or spring onto my turbo to disable the wastegate. The pictures from your earlier post really helped BWB. I'm pretty sure that once I get my intake hose off, and get to looking at things it won't take long to finger-it-out. Thanks again.

You cannot just disable the wastgate. Yes you can do it, but the results are that any boost over 19. 5 psi, and the computer begins de-fueling the engine...

You need a boost fooler(boost module) that goes between the map sensor and the harness, and either a boost elbow, or just disconnect the wastegate line and plug the hole in the turbo. This stops the computer from seeing the extra boost.

I did this and wasn't happy with the results. The engine did seem more responsive, but I lost 3. 5 mpg towing... not sure why, but since I ditched the boost fooler, and hooked back up the wastegate my mileage is back up to normal towing.

Just some thoughts.
