Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Poll - Lift Pump Problems on your 24V?

Was wondering how high EGT's are going on a 'regular' basis. Not sustained, just short term romps. I am having trouble staying under 1500 and can't even get into sixth !!!!

Level 5 is as high as I can go on my Powermax3 Competition, and still tow, and that's with a PDR Hx40. I can put it on 6 for drag racing , but it puts the needle off the end of the scale.

Got enough fuel(for now :D ), just need more boost to burn it.

Oops! Stock, I could hit 1300 degF pre-turbo towing the 5ver. In current configuration, I can't pound them over 1100 degF. Guess I didn't make the "big boy" cut either with my pore ole trailer toter. :(

partyat33,

Whatcha got fer mods? I only see 1500* if I'm really pourin' the coals to 'er. Even with a trailer on, PM Comp on 1, it's not bad at all, unless I flogg it, then 'course it climbs through the roof. If I have the PM Comp on Nuke, in a drag racin' frenzy, it climbs and eventually gets pinned, but by that time the race in pretty much over. Under typical hotdoggin' conditions, I really have to work to get it real high. See my sig fer BOBMs, also it's the stock HX-35 on my truck.

EGTs

I don't make the cut either. I have my probe about 2 inches upstream of the turbo housing flange. The most I let my EGTs get to is ~1050. I downshift from 5th to 4th when I get to 1050, this brings me into the 800-900 degree range. I saw 1100 once and took action as I understand that anything above 1250 degree will spell dissaster in short order.

I guess 'show signature' was off.

Here are the Mods

The reason for the poll is for me to get an idea how high I can go for brief periods of time without torching it.

Id like to know what the limit is also, I've heard that over 1300* for over 30sec. is a meltdown, and over 1450* for 30sec. is a bad thing, and plenty of other guide lines. I hope someone that knows the real majic number will tell us what it is.

While towing I try and limit the egt's(pre turbo) to 1400*while pulling a grade. Usually only this temp for a short period of time.

I see about 1200 if I go from 0-125 MPH without even a hint of let up on the throttle, and as soon as the TC locks in OD it drops to about 1150. I have seen 1400 on my truck before, and held it for about 15 seconds.

Personally I would hold 1400 for as long as it took to do what I wanted, if that was 30 seconds or 30 minutes I would not worry about it. The guys that have been blazing the HP trail for the 24V are not having problems. HVAC comes to mind, and in talking to him he has hit 1800 several hundred if not several thousand times and has not had any heat induced problems. Never a melted piston, never a burnt valve. I do not think he has ever found a heat crack in the head either, but I am not positive on that. Personally I think way too much attention is placed on EGT being high when racing or hotrodding. Extended runs like towing or dyno runs for a while are a different story. I say "let her eat!!!" when just fooling around.

I first got a clue that high EGT was nothing to freak about, two years ago, when Dave Mitchell took me, Johnboy, and Gene(Sled Puller) for a test ride in the red 2wd dually with one of his first sets of twin turbos on it.

It was hilarious. Nothing new to him, but to us, with our heads bouncing off the headrests from the brute acceleration, and listening to him say, " watch me hit over 1800 and see how it stays there, no problem" it was all at the same time, funny, educational, and very enjoyable.

Imagine having way more fuel than twin turbos can feed enough air to burn... ... :D I envy the guys in his shop, sometimes.

Didn't make the cut either :(

Well, didn't make the cut for the poll, but with the EZ box, and 275 injectors, and an AFE air filter -pulling the 5er for a long uphill stetch I can hit 1100.

Hmmmm. . maybe that's a good thing :)

You need some lower scales on your chart. I see maybe 900-1000 under load, towing. I thought I had a bad gauge but we tested it with a temple stick (1000 deg) and it was right on.

1200 plus Comp on 1 x2

Hi

I thing mym isopro maybe reading high as I can get to 1200 with comp on 1x2 and have not used the pump wire yet.

Thats some really good info. I keep thinking that pieces of aluminum will come flying out if I go over 1500.

1800 Here we come !!!

Dennis

See Sig below to see what I am running minus B-1. With box on 5x5 I can hit 1300 to 1400. Towing trailer in sig below running only DD II's, I do not go over 1000. This is all pre turbo. Ken

Basically Stock Eth too HOT!!!

My POST turbo hits 1000 regularly with the slide in Camper on. Pulling up the mountains in Colorado I sit at 900 - 950 for 10 minutes at a time. I have done what I thought would help cool it down, but it is still really hot. I have to let it idle in my driveway after my trip home from work EMPTY for 4-5 minutes to drop the temp to 350.

ETHs just run way too hot.
