Looking to upgrade from my 95 cummins to a 2006 4x4 quad cab short bed automatic with the 5. 9. Any particular areas I should pay attention to when looking at these trucks besides the normal signs of good maintenance? I want a 5. 9, and found a few 2006 trucks with the options I like. All of the trucks I have been looking at are in 40k - 60k mile range

At around 40,000 miles, expect front u-joints to be near the end of their life. Also expect upper ball joints to be next. My automatic trans was junk at 28,000 miles when I bought it. Had it rebuilt and beefed up at 35,000 and have been pleased ever since. '06s had an issue with the tachometer giving erratic readings, usually low. Either replace the gauge cluster or get a digital monitor to correct the issue.
The seat cushion eventually works it's way into the springs, so you will need to fix that, too. Search the forum here to find how to fix that with a carpet remnant and foam.

That's all I can think of for now...

On my '07(built in '06), driver side front u joint went out at 27k. I replaced both with Chrysler badged Federal Mogul, made in Japan, greasable joints. There's the common death wobble issue that can destroy ball joints, u joints, steering boxes, etc. On mine there was no breather filter on the fuel tank - fixed by getting a cheap fuel filter at NAPA and attaching with a short length of hose. You may be able to shame your dealer into fixing it - they have a kit for it. Never heard of the tach issue MChrist mentioned. I'll have to keep an eye on that. Other than those things, mine has been trouble free. Changing the fuel filter is critical for CP3 and injector life.

06+ is very sensitive to electrical issues- ie hack jobs on adding electrical accessories. so be ware

chek all trailer plugs for lights and turn and power (every terminal) if now power/signal search tipm problem (cab be expensive to fix- dealer only)

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Looks like front ujoints are something I would need to replace, if they haven't been replaced already. Looking through the postings, its hard for me to tell how many miles people are getting with the greasable ujoints.

i got 110K on orig rear driveline u joints (carrier was bad, but did the one piece upgrade)
I am on 120k on frt u joints now. no clicking or noise
My frt sags quite a bit with winch and frt bumper
orig frt wheel bearing lasted 60K
