to be honest the only thing i wished dodge would have done was stayed with the 89-93 body style and just have built quad cabs and full 4 door trucks, im partial to the older style front end.

And when they went away from the leaf spring setup under the front end, man that was a mistake as most of us with 2nd gen. trucks have had ball joint failure at a early mileage. but some might agree or not, not sure...

they are both great. but too look at a brand new common rail cummins, or a power stroke or durmax. i don't see much difference anymore. the thing that made the cummins so impressive to the early buyers was the fact that it was indeed a tractor motor. i love dodge 24 vavles too, but will run all mechanical 12 valve for as long as i can find them. analogy: i own a rusty 67 galaxie. points ignition and very simple. i also own a rusty 91 olds. i would easily take some tools and a set of points and head to california with the 67 over the heavily electronics burden olds. i just hate electronics. that is the thing that leaves you stranded on the side of the road, if all electronics were made like bmw makes them it may be different, i hate beemers anyhow but they do over engineer the electronics. just my opin.

Yeah I had a 12v and traded it up for a 24v just to try something different. Personally I like them both, the 12v sounded way better and was really cheap to mod. But what ever. The 24v has a way better interior. I think if I could do it all over again, which I probably could if I cared enough. I'd do a 98 12v. but I'm fine with both motors. and who cares about a lift pump anyways, through a FASS on there and you'll be good to go.

I have not owned and first or 3rd gen truck so don't have knowledge of them. To each his own and all I can say is with mine being stock other than using Superchips the only real problem I have had so far is a failed lift pump at around 80,000 miles. So far so good and nothing to complain about. Like others I bought this truck because I wanted a real deisel engine than the things being used in other manufacturer trucks. But people like them to and great for them won't argue with them either. I know have 96,500 on the truck hope this keeps going!!!!!I don't run the truck hard even pulling my 14,000 # 5ER. Which reminds me I needd to get another lift pump for a spare if this one gives it up.

Had a 92 12 valve for 185k never even knew where the lift pump was, my 02 24 valve is on its 3rd lift pump and second injection pump. Don,t ever try to tell me how grand the 24v setup is. But being fair the number of valves and the electronics have little to do with my problems. The fuel intake system is terrible, Cummins should fire whoever was responsible for that mess, and if it was Dodge, Cummins should have told them NO, Cummins reputation has suffered badly because of that defective fuel system they passed off on us.

You hit the nail right on the head about the fuel delivery system. One of the first things I did was go into the fuel tank and install a 5/8in pipe into the fuel module to feed my 24valve. Knock on wood I still have the original VP44 its been feeding my 600 plus hp engine for more than two years.

I had a 93 4x4 Reg cab for 7 years and really like the looks with 12:50x33x16. 5 on Mags, Warn front bumper and some diamond plate here and there. But it road like a brick truck, the lack of Torque Converter lockup made the exhaust brake useless and it did not have brakes. My 2001. 5 rides much better, the four wheel disc brakes are super and it has a nice cab. Knock on wood, 40K and no issues with LP or VP. Has always had around 14 lbs of fuel pressure at idle, 11 or so at cruise and 6-8 at WOT. SNOKING

Well I still like the 24 valve under my hood, but if I had to buy another one I would probably buy either a 12 valve or 24 valve. I dont like electronics but I like the ease of making HP and Torque with the 24 valve. Thats just my opinion.

Let's see a 12V guy radically retune his engine is less than 2 minutes!

The new Smarty can give you anything from radical full Catcher to half-power (must be real doggy) in under 2 minutes!

Try *that* with a 12V.

I prefer mechanical simplicity as well, but the convenience that electronics can provide is quite alluring once you get used to it.

SO Ha it is easier to make power with the 24 valve engines Oo.

now hold on a min it depends on what ya'll mean by easier yes some one skilled on a computer could in a matter of about 5 min possibly double hp and tq however not very many people are that handy or have all the software to write the program. however anyone who is a memeber of this site could in about 10 minutes add a good amount of power w/ just a few simple tools and some advise from the member here. so again i say it depends on what skills ya'll have for you its easy to run the comp and rewrite it all. for me i barley know how to type its far easier for me to just get my tools and dive in the engine and tune it.

plug the "box" into the sensors and tap the pump wire for your computer BOX

run a few electrical wires and mount it. no downloading or any powerstroke programmer 10min download crud. push the power ON and push the button to the level you want. when you want it off just push the button

easy as 1. . 2. . 3!!

Ian

PLUG AND PLAY ALL THE WAY!!

anyone else heard that in '07 they are gonna start requiring all diesels to have a visual emmisions inspection nation wide ...

looks like those of you that settled for the lowly 12 valve had better start digging up some catalytic convertors ...

*cough*BS*cough*

I might be wrong but i think the 12V at least the early ones only had resonator cans, at least thats whats on my 92 and that system is still factory... on the '00 it had a resonator can and muffler, needless to say the muffler is hanging in the basement LOL...

wait till i see you again :-{} :-laf :-laf

But there is one thing about it, no matter if its the 12valve or the 24valve you have under the hood, its nice to know you can pull just about anything you heart desires even if you need to move your house 2 or 3 feet :)

Hell Yes! I'm glad that you said that because even though I started this thread, that is a very good point that you brought up, and like I said at least its not a duramax or a powerjoke under the hood!
