Just bought a 1998 12 Valve, 4 door!

The previous owner installed a "Banks kit". I can see it has the "dual horn" intake, and a bigger downpipe and exhaust. The turbo says HX35, and I have the build number, etc. if that would help.

I seem to feel a real delay to build boost at low RPM's (below 1500) and it is REALLY bad to "bog" out when cold (10 degrees outside, but I mean it idles for 15 minutes, and it is still 2-4 miles before I can give it half throttle)

So I am thinking it has a larger housing? How do you tell? My other trucks (I have 4) seem to boost better, and I can usually drive them normal, right away, if I have it plugged in...

Once warmed up, it will hit 30 PSI no problem... .

The banks housing is a 14cm wastegated housing. It will spool slower than your stock 12 cm housings but what you're describing sounds more in depth. Possibly a fuel problem.

yeah, I dont really see a lot of white smoke when I bog it... you think the Air anode thingy? (it has been a few years since I had to do anything to mine,) but I am talking about the star wheel you turn to increase the black smoke

Overflow valve?? fuel filter?? If it were me these would be two places I'd check, then boost leaks.

Give the star wheel a try. I like it adjusted so that I can see a little black smoke when hit the gas. You should not see any white smoke. If you see white smoke, you have a bad head gasket or a cracked head.

Mine acted the same when my fuel return line went bad. The leak was so small that I couldn't find the problem until the leak got big enough to drip on the ground. The leak was in the hose behind the fuel pump.

I made a leak boost leak tester by using two rubber , clamp-on, pipe caps (as seen in a past issue of TDR). I then drilled a hole in one and installed a metal tire valve stem. It took about 5 minutes to make and another 5 to test. Install one on the passenger side intercooler. Install the other on the tube that connects to the intake. Be carefull not to over inflate. 15 psi is more than enough pressure to test the system. Wait a few seconds and retest. A leak should present itself rather quickly. Good luck
