Yellowstone Drug Store

On our recent trip to Yellowstone, my son and I stopped at the "Yellowstone Drug Store" in Shoshone WY (least I think that's where it was). They had been advertising shakes and malts for 100 miles, so we had to have one.

They were pretty doggone good, don't know what kind of ice cream they use but the lady making them doesn't stint on the portions. She put about a full quart of ice cream into every malt, came out so thick we had to use a spoon at first.

On the wall they had a sign that said they had used 15,000+ gallons of ice cream last year making malts, to the tune of 65,000 malts sold that year (!). They are located in an old bank building, but with all the fixtures from the circa 1910 drugstore - big wooden cabinets with glass fronts, big old soda counter, etc. Those malts, along with a good old greasy cheeseburger and fries, kept us in good spirits the rest of the trip :-laf :-laf

Mike you were up there in Kevin Whitmore's courtry. Did you see him? I think he frequents that store. He likes them malts. All you would of had to do was ask if theres a idiot in town.

Blue Bell, gets my vote also, there's even a Blue Bell distribution center less than half a mile away from my work. I might sign on to be a taste tester when I retire. Oo.

You fellows are going to get fat eating all of this ice cream. :D If I was at home now I would get me a bowl.

I have not tried Blue Bell but just plain Breyer's Vanilla does the trick for me.

The Turtle Sundae from Cold Stone is really good.

Blue Bell here also for eating at home. If I'm eating in town it's Andy's frozen custard. They also have a Cold Stone Creamery down in Branson Missouri.

Well if you are ever in the Cincinnati or Columbus OH area, you need to try Graeters. Very good, and creamy. Any of the flavors that have chocolate chips in it have a lot of chips and if you are the lucky person, you may find a hunk of chocolate that is about 1/4 the size of a hershey bar.

They make there chocolate chips by pouring melted chocolate into the ice cream while it is still in the mixer/freezer.

The absolute best ice cream is

Blue Bell Tin Roof Sundae

or

Blue Bell "The Great Divide"

or

Blue Bell Vanilla Bean - on top of a fresh hot brownie with chocolate syrup.

Ofcourse Blue Bell does have thier own singing cow.

It is hard to find though because "They eat what they can and sell the rest!"

Mike, I visited the Yellowstone Malt Shop in Shoshoni WY last year - when I lived in WY as a kid we always stopped there when coming home to Casper from Thermopolis. Their shakes are THE best, even now. The funniest thing is how run down the rest of Shoshoni is, at least where that old store is. I remember going to the general store across the street once as a kid - it's still there, with merchandise inside, but boarded up for over a decade now. There's another Yellowstone Malt Shop in Casper (on CY Avenue near the A&W), but I didn't get the chance to see if they were as good.

Well, being from Vermont, I obviously have a slight bias for Ben & Jerry's. Phish Food, Cherry Garcia, Dublin Mudslide, and, well, most any flavor tops my list of favorites.

I'm planning a pilgrimage to Waterbury, VT (the home of B&J's) later this summer with a bunch of friends to tackle the "world famous" VERMONTSTER!!! It's a 2 1/2 gallon bucket, with a bunch of choc. chip cookies in the bottom, 6 bananas, something like 30 scoops of ice cream (any flavors in stock), topped with 2 or 3 cans of whipped cream, tons of nuts, and enough cherries for everyone. And the best part? If you finish it, you get a voucher for another one, free :) That is, if you ever want to try to do it again, lol. When I go, I'll be sure to take photos and let y'all know how it ends... .

Farson, WY also has an ice cream cone shop that is a favorite stopping place for folks passing through. Don't know what kind of ice cream but when you are traveling across Wyoming on a hot day even Safeway Select may seem like top end foo foo stuff.

Recommended. :)
