Who's going to buy the new diesel vehicles?

I've been reading through several automotive forums and people are talking about how many manufacturers have diesel powered vehicles in the works. . Who in the world is gonna buy them?? Within the last year, it's been made pretty clear that diesel fuel is a precious commodity, and is predicted to be even more so in the future. Whats the point of offering more diesels? That will only make prices higher. I think we are quickly heading to a point where diesel cost twice as much as a gallon of gas. . Am I missing something? I know this topic is a dead horse, but oh well. . I just can't see anyone in their right mind buying a diesel if things continue on the path they are going.

I'm not buying anything soon. But will be lookin for something that gets 30 to 40 mpg.

I don't think diesel will stay so much more than gas forever. Today diesel dropped 20 cents a gallon in my town.

Now *IF* diesel cars and trucks became a major part of the U. S. market then diesel price would drop because some of the gas refining could be turned over to diesel refining which is cheaper. However I can't invision reaching that point before some other technology is introduced to the public on large scale.

I'll either be buying a Megacab or a Jeep Commander when they bring the diesel version over here. I'll never own another gas powered vehicle. Plus I can burn American farmer produced Bio-diesel and support our country instead of a foreign country. When I buy a vehicle I keep it for many many miles. The gas vehicles are a huge waste of money when you do this. What do you think a hybrid is going to be worth when the little crackerjack box is out of warranty?

I plan on purchasing atleast 2 more diesel vehicles in the future. 99-03 Ford Crew Cab/Shortbed 4x2 for the wife (well get a CTD transplant when the PSD gives up) and a 3rd Gen. Dodge Crew Cab CTD/NV5600 for me. The kids well probably get diesel vehicles once they can drive (not anytime soon tho).

The MB R-class when it was first intoruced used a diesel hybrid. I was really thinking wow what a novel idea, but it shoed up with a std 6 and 8 cyl gasser in them.



Wonder why the chickened out, could it be our Crappy fuel????

Sorry, but I just had a conspiracy plot and had to share. What if the oil companies are seeing that the popularity of diesel vehicles is on the rise because of increased fuel economy? If everyone switched to diesel, there would be less demand for fuel, especially if biodiesel production really takes off. Perhaps they artifically created the shortage so that the average consumer who can't do math (It still costs me less/mi. for there to be a $. 60 difference) will shy away from the benefits of a diesel vehicle. I'm usually not really big on conspiracy theories, but this sounded like it could be a plausable idea.

I've had the same thought.

I don't care how much the fuel is, our Jetta gets 46 m. p. g. in town. That beats the heck out of even a 30 m. p. g. gasser!
