Going to work today I ran into problems as I was losing power during excelleration. I was running about 65 mph when I had a light jurk in the truck and lost power. This continued for about 4-5 miles on and off untill I got to work. When I pulled in at work I pressed in the clutch and it died. I tryed to start and it would not start. It would turn over. It happen 2 other times a couple of days ago where there was a jurk in at like it lost power for a 1/2 of a second. Went out at lunch and tryed to start but no luck. Went back out about 3:00 and did have it fire and run for a few seconds but died out again and would not start. I let some fuel out of the water seperator just in case but no luck. Also tryed to hand pump fuel for about 35 pumps (does this build any pressure in the system as it pumped easy) and no luck again. Then I cracked the injectors when cranking the motor untill fuel came out and still no luck. I have a head gasket leak on the back passenger side which is leaking outward. Checked oil and it looked good with no excessive amount so I don't think that is my problem (gasket leaking inward). Any ideas on where to start next? Thanks to all!!!

Check your connection to your shutoff solenoid. It is toward the top rear of the injector pump, toward the firewall from the AFC housing. It has one or two wires that clip onto it; the blue one is the power source. Make sure it is on there good and tight. Make sure you're getting power to the solenoid wire. Beyond that, I'm not sure how to help you without looking at it. I'm sure someone else has some more ideas.

Daniel Thanks as I will check it tomorrow as I know which wire you mean as I had moisure problems back about 4 years ago with my gages and I made sure all my engine compartment connections were clean and I put on the dielectric silicon on all connections. Thanks!!!

Any other Ideas?

Dan

Dan,

My ideas are only as deep as the troubleshooting logic in the shop manual. I am reading from the section Which says:Engine cranks but will not start- no smoke from the exhaust.

1 No fuel.

2 Eletrical shut down not open

-check and verify that valve is functioning. be sure manual shut off lever is in the run position.

3 Air filter/ exhaust plugged.

4 fuel filter plugged with water/other/gasoline

-drain fuel/water seperator, replace filter

5 Injection pump not getting fuel or fuel is aerated

-check fuel flow, bleed fuel system

6 Worn or malfunctioning injection pump

There are a few other items left on the list, but let's hope that the truck is running by the time you get to #4

good luck.

Dan you said that you cracked the lines and got fuel to come out. that leads me to believe that the electric is ok. I had that problem about 12 years on an 89. it was a plug or cap ( probly a fancy name for it) between all the inj. lines screws into the head of the pump. Mine would crank for a wile till it made enough pressure to fire. Got worse and worse till no more start. If I cracked the lines I got plenty fuel because it recuired no pressure. It takes a special socket to r&r it.

Thanks Guys as I got it running after work today as it seems that the plug connection or a wire might be bad as I took off the soenoid plug and it still had the dieletric silicon on it and it was clean. moved the wires around looking for any wear in the coating. I repluged it in and its running good now so I will keep an eye on it.

Thanks
