I'm planning on installing a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller in my '85 Crew Cab converted over to Cummins (complete with '92 dash and wiring). I'm an electrical dummy, if you will, and after doing a search here I'm wondering if I'm in danger of burning my truck to the ground. I read several articles about trailer wiring needing to be seperate and having circuit breakers, etc. I have a 4-pin connector, it is one of the kits thats plugs in the back where the tailight wiring harness connects to the body wiring harness. This fits "in between" those plugs. The trailer I'm towing is just a car hauler... it this not an adviseable setup??

For the brake controller, I have printed off the manufacturer's instructions which seem quite straight-forward... is it OK to just splice the "brake" wire (blue wire in their case) of the controller into the brake wire of the trailer wiring harness?

Thanks guys.

I just got thru with my prodigy, and put in that 20 amp circuit breaker for sure, I am also going to add the 30 amp relay for the parking lights I dont want my truck burning up, I already have to much time invested in it, and I like it better than my 03, well atleast as much. :)

I would suggest the relay also from what I"ve read are headlight switch can barely handle the load it has on it already, plus if you tow anything bigger you're covered. To make the prodigy install easier you can buy a small fuse block with maybe 4 circuits on it and run everthing off of that just get a small relay and run the charge circuit on the relay and the power for the prodigy off of the fuse block also.

Where did you put the 20 circuit breaker? Between what?

mounted it on the inner fender forward of the 3 relays already there, as a matter of fact its on the headlight side of the fender brace at the battery. Got mine at Napa. Your prodigy instructions tell you you need a 20 amp circuit breaker. The relay for the trailer lights is another animal all by itself, I put mine on the parking lamps with the wire that comes from the switch.

I ran a wire from the battery down to the fuse block and then inserted the circuit breaker in the fuse spot and out to the prodigy,as far as the relay goes I switched the relay off my parking lights and and down to the fuse box and then out to my trailer lights. I also have a battery charge circuit with a ten amp fuse on it for my trailer battery.
