I'm looking at 04. 5- 05 truck and know that i can tell if its an HO engine by the VIN #. What letter or number in what spot of the VIN means its a HO with a 48RE? Its easier to call a dealer and ask for a VIN # then it is to drive out there and find out its the wrong truck.

A little more specific, read the engine data plate which is actually a white decal stuck on the driver's side of the valve cover. It will list horsepower rating for that engine.

I know to look on the engine if im actually there but i dont want to drive 100 miles to look at a truck thats listed as a 2004 and find ou its a 2004 and not a 2004. 5. if i just call the dealer, then i can get the VIN # and know what engine it has.

After much hard looking:

the 8th position in the vin has to be a c for the HO engine.
