Recently purchased an '07. 5 C&C for pulling my equipment trailer. I purchased the truck in Phoenix with 33,000 miles on it (the only modification to the truck is an Air Raid air filter and the former owner had removed the muffler and installed "Stacks'). Everything worked normally until I made a trip to Utah. As soon as I climbed from Saint George (elevation about 2000') to Cedar City (elevation above 6000') I got a check engine light. When I plugged in the code reader it indicated a P0101 code. I cleared the code several times while in Utah and it always came back. When I returned to the Phoenix area I again cleared the code and it has not since returned. The only difference in conditions that are obvious are a significant increase in elevation and a much colder climate in Utah (50 dg F. , vs 5 dg F. ). Any ideas would be appreciated.

According to my 2008 manual:

P0101-MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR "A" CIRCUIT PERFORMANCE

The PCM checks the MAF at two different times: one during key on, engine off; the other while the engine is running and the EGR is off. Failure of either check can set the code. The manual suggests checking the following:
MAF sensor dirty
Air cleaner bad
Air leaks in air intake system

Do a search here for "cleaning MAF sensor" and try that.

Welcome to TDR!

I don't know what an Air-Raid air filter is but I would check to see if it will fit in the bottom of your trash can.

Many (most?) of those aftermarket air filters don't filter minute particles from intake air as well as the OEM MOPAR/Fleetguard filter and don't do the slightest thing for performance or economy.

If your engine develops problems such as excessive oil consumption or emissions issues and a dealer sees that POS on your truck your warranty could be voided.

The aftermarket air filter could be related to the codes you saw.

I wonder if the previous owner also removed any of the exhaust emissions equipment?

Did you buy that truck from a dealer or a private individual?

Oil from the filter can cause the sensors to have problems also. As Harvey said, trash it and go back to the stock air box with the stock filter, of course you won't have your original air box, but I'm sure lots of guys here have one sitting in their garage that may give it or sell it to you. I went back to the stock box and filter and didn't notice any performace loss. Note my signature, I'm not stock and I could get the overhead consule to chime in and say to "service air filter" due to the restrictions when I turned up the chip and tromped on it, this was with the oiled filter and aftermarket box. Now with the stock box/paper and modified 4" pipe on the underside of the box going down to just below the bumper(search PSM intakefor similar item) and a 45 degree elbow on it that sits about 1. 5" below the air dam, I accually have a noticeable power/responce inprovment feel to the truck and the overhead consule has yet to chime in and say to "service air filter". I block the pipe to the bumper in the winter as I don't need the cold air, snow or extra power and cooling of intake air at this time. Along with this gain, is the comfort that I'm using the filter that Cummins/Fleetguard designed for the motor.

You should be okay to obtain warranty service from the selling dealer assuming it was a Ram dealer. But if something really serious (expensive) should go wrong with your engine Chrysler sometimes sends a factory service rep around to inspect before authorizing expensive repair or replacement. I think you can be sure the factory rep will void your warranty on the spot if he sees an aftermarket air box.

Thanks for the information, I'm going to install the original air box (and filter) if I can one.
As in the rest of the country SW Az is having unusual weather (actually froze the water to my RV last night). Driving the truck last night, while accelerating hard, I got the P0101 code again. The ambient temperature was 40 deg (code seems to be related to temp). I've installed an Edge Insight to monitor conditions and happened to be monitoring engine load when the light came on. The engine load PID actually read 110%. Don't know if that had anything to do with the alert. Still running the Air Raid air filter. Can't seem to find a stock air box.
