I would never tow in 6th. The trans gets way to hot. I mean I towed a little 16 ft and was shocked at the temps. I am talking 240 and higher in the heat. Winter about 200. I now pull a 46 ft goozneck and I weigh in at 27K +. I have since installed a GV where I can overdrive 5th and temps are well within check now, Summer temps are in the 180-190. And for some reason the rear end even runs cooler.

Where are you pulling temps from?

So you moved the heat generation from the trans to the GV unit which us problematic anyway. Wonder just what the strain is doing to it. What are the temps in the GV over driven as opposed to direct?

There are coolers for NV units and since you are over wieght they are mandatory along with frequent fluid changes. You would much better off going to 4. 10's and a slightly taller tire to adjust for top speed.

Unfortunately its a zero sum game. Your not going to gain by putting the stress into a failure prone unit.
