2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission AmI running operating temp to cool???

I would like to know what you guys are running for thermostats... . I am consistent at 180 degrees with the stat that came with the truck. I bought it used, so I don't know if anyone changed the thermostat. So far, Afe intake and exhaust and a little tweak to the star wheel and mpg seems to be suffering????

I always use the 190 stat. Get it from Cummins, it'll cost you more than the cheapo units the parts stores have, but it is a much higher quality and you won't be replacing it every other year.

180 is fine, that is what those trucks came with stock. I see no reason to increase it just don't run it below 140 and you'll be fine.

Water temp and EGTs are two separate things. A continuous high EGT will make the coolant temp rise over time but it is because the engine is working. These engines have such an over engineered cooling system that short bursts of high power won't make any difference at all. A higher coolant temp will actually improve performance and milage. The other side of the coin is there are specific Cummins thermostats made for the different models of engines. If you give them the serial# of your engine there is only one 'stat for it, no choice of temps.

I thought they generally came with 190 T-stats. Both '01s I owned (one new, one bought at 88k) always ran about a half needle width above 190F.

Early 24v came with 180 they raised to 190 for improved emissions



Now the 4th gens are up to 200
