The greatest smoke story is that the EPA noticed and took drastic action. Way to go, diesel boys, you just cost everyone who buys a new one thousands of dollars.
Unlikely.
California is patient zero for all things evil, ergo the saying, what happens in CA, will eventually happen across the country. Most of their pollution comes across the pond from China.
I've met a couple of engineers that brag about engines that they have designed that during tests, the exhaust is cleaner than the ambient air. I respond with, "So why don't you just build a bunch of them and just leave them running to clean up your problem and stay out of ours?"
The reality is that a majority of the power upgrades that do get done actually improve emissions on our trucks when driven "normally". My emissions tests with the below pedigree was way better than the truck ever did stock. I'd say this is how it should have been built in the first place.
Not saying that my right rear fender is not coated in soot, she'll black out an intersection for the asking. I've come to the point that I try to keep it clean, but sometimes it does get a bit hazy behind me.
The last time I felt the need to fog someone was driving up in the mountains on a lesser highway. CO has a law that pedal bikers must be in single file. I'm fine with sharing the road, but when you have a 10' lane with no shoulder to speak of, driving a dually and three pedal pumpers are riding parallel keeping traffic backed up behind them at 15mph in the 45 (nobody wants to pass on a blind corner - we have to give them 3 feet by law), well, 5x5 on the comp, & WOT in 4th gear from 15mph does kind of roll the smoke. Breathe deep boys, your eyes would not be watering if you obeyed the law.
I get more enjoyment now out of going lighting up the twins passing some little street racer and the natural effect of the 5" to 4" exhaust with the exhaust brake design does give quite the banshee howl out the tailpipe when I go over 35# of boost.
