I'm looking at buying a first gen. The one I found seems to have a solid body other than some bubbled paint above the windshield. The guy pulled the headliner too so I've got pictures of both. I've heard horror stories on these roofs so I'm wondering if I should run or if it's something to consider buying. Photos below.

If that's all, she's a winner from what I see. Blast n paint the outside. Inside? I'd maybe do POR15 but you'd really have to cover and mask really well.

178k on the engine. There is a list of things that need attention. transmission probably needs rebuilt. Park is out. ac compressor is out. the piece that connects the pump linkage to the pump is broken so it needs replaced. Asking price is $4k.

As for the good: 100hp injectors, stage 3 fuel pin, 60 mm gillett turbo, advanced timing, studded, valves lapped, head decked. New rear end with 3.07 gear ratio. New shocks.

I'm trying to learn as much as possible bout these. The engine has 178k on it. Body is pretty dang clean except for this bubbling. It does have some issues that need addressed. transmission probably needs rebuilt. Park is out. AC compressor is out. I would expect to see all these things. Judging from the gear ratio, it's a early non O/D truck. Awesome trucks but my biggest gripe is the lack of a lock up torque converter. All the engine's grunt is lost in the converter.

Truck is early. Its a 90. Can anything be done to get the power out of it? I won't be tow anything super heavy. Heaviest load will probably be 7-8k.

I think you need the buyers guide which can be downloaded in PDF.
These early 1 gen's don't have OD, and are not intercooled. You can work the pump (it may have been already) a bit, but you're limited. I believe the power rating is 160/400. Unless you're pulling real heavy grades, it'll be fine at that weight. If you're open to mods, and can spend a bit on upgrades, and not afraid to be busy, the sky is the limit.
