When do yall do the first oil change on your new trucks? My new 4500 is at 4,600 miles and I just ordered the "4/2/2" filter service kit and a Mopar air filter from Genos to have on hand. Also, I have always run Rotella 15W40 oil in my other trucks. Is there any other recommendation for the new ones? Any special tools required? Thanks, John

My first oil change was free at the dealer so I took it in at the one year mark and since I only had 3000 miles on it they told me the first one wasn't due until 15000 regardless of the timeline. I wouldn't go more than a year without changing it so I did have the oil change done after a road trip and had 5000 miles on it. I dont rack up miles on mine like many do so I do mine once a year since I never come close to the 15k the book calls for. I'd also say that if you haul heavy which I assume you do since you got a 4500, the service interval is less.

Here we go again, per the manual on MY 2014 ,Every 6months or 15K miles . I do mine every six month. I go nowhere near 15K in six months . Where the dealers come up with some of the stuff they tell people I'll never know.

As far as oil my choice is also the T4 Rotella 15W-40

Here are all my reports and they show my first early oil change at about 2,700 miles and the rest at 15k odo increments. AMZ/OIL 15-40 FULL Synthetic with FleetGuard Stratapore Filter.

First one at 500 miles, then a regular OCI.

Did you or them even look at the owners manual?

It’s 6 months, 15K miles, or when the oil change reminder tells you. Whichever comes first, not last.

Oil starts to break down the first time the vehicle is started after an oil change. This is why the 6 month interval exists for standard oils.

12,677 miles and 236 drive hours.

Additionally.....on the 4500’s and 5500’s......you can change the oil filter from below, just like the 2007.5 through 2012 6.7L’s.

4600-5000 miles is a good time for a first oil change.

Until it gets broke in good you probably have a few wesr metals in the original oil.

I waited 4.5 years to do my first oil analysis and see negligable wear metals. Just waited for it to get good and broke in before checking my oil condition.

I religiously have always changed my oil on my 1996 and 2003 trucks every 5,000 miles. That came to around 200 hours on the 2003 (which I recently sold). I will do my initial oil change at 5,000 (which I am about to hit) and then less frequently. How accurate is the "oil life" and "fuel filter life" on the dash gauge?

The oil and fuel filter percentages are based entirely on a 15,000 mile counter.

Close to 6mo or longer, I really don't care since I am doing analysis every change and they say I could go longer every time.

Do you think if you extend to a year lets say, and have an engine failure due to lubrication , that oil analysis will prove anything in a warranty situation . Or do you even care about the warranty, its more about how many miles you can get out of an oil change.

Simply not worried about it. I change EVERYTHING at 15k. Easy to remember.

Fuel generally appears so, but oil will vary based on use. At least that’s how dad’s ‘17 has been working.
Again.....my experiences have been 15k “counter” on the oil change intervals as well........pretty much like clockwork on my previous 2014 RAM 3500 that was bought new and sold at 362k (about 24 or 25 oil changes IIRC).

My 2013 fuel filter counter/minder only gives me 12,200 miles. It's got some wrong programming like the idle hours counter. In 5 1/3 years i have only 8 idle hours? Hmmmm

That could be your useage. It doesn’t mean it’s only a 15K mile counter. Under the right circumstances it will certainly go to 15K.

Not worried is fine, but my point is for some that may be listening to YOUR advice about going off of oil analysis for oil changes, and ignoring the oil change intervals in the manual. Blackstone is sure not going to stand behind a thing they tell you when something goes south.

Best advice for anyone is to simply follow the manual on oil change intervals, at least you are covered on warranty.
