Not sure what I was thinking.....because if you did go back to 3.42's, your cognitive dissonance would kick in and your mind would rationalize why it is nicer to have the trans shift down more often....and stay in a lower gear more often.

I have no doubt, whatever you purchase, it will be the best thing ever....:p

and then, you would be disappointed after towing with your 4.10's and hopefully you'd fully understand what low gears can do.

For the way we have used our truck towing at 60-62 MPH, the 3.42's are just right in 5th gear towing at 1700-1750 RPM's. 3.73's would have the engine spinning more RPMs in 5th and to low of RPMs in 6th around 1500.

It will be interesting to see the actual final gear choices when a build becomes available. Chris
Nope, I towed 65k at 29k combined with 3.42’s. ONLY NEGATIVE was hill starts. That is a non issue with 3.42’s and AISIN. I know a guy that owns a RV even heavier than mine at 34k combined with a 2013 RAM DRW short box crew. He has the AISIN and 3.42’s. He said ZERO issues with hill starts.

He loves his combo. Full time RVer traveling the country since 2013.

It is my option that the 3.73 are a concession to the 68RFE's higher first gear, and a lot of people with Aisin's in 3500 SRW will be caught up in it.

Many have expressed the desire to see an 8 speed automatic. It seems an 8 speed would shift more and 8th gear would be locked out in Tow Haul. Those wanting to see an 8 speed transmission don't see an issue with more shifting?

A robust HD transmission is OK shifting often. As long as it is designed for that use & remains cool enough. The way these trannies reportedly lock up quickly, i see no problem with a 3.73 or 3.42 with either an Aisin or 68RFE up to 30k GVCW. I think the 4.10's are really for those pulling heavy (above 30k) all the time in mountains where controlling the load with the EB becomes more challenging?

But what do i know. I'm a g56er with a single overdrive and not nearly the experience that most of you have with towing and heavy duty drive trains

Bridge in Jacksonville may be the highest point in your state!!!!!

Maybe. That's why I love my 3.42's. And i'd like a 7th gear added to my g56. But nobody does that.

Is it (Jack Bridge) taller than 7 mile bridge? Maybe!
There is also a tall bridge on the Turnpike near the border of Martin County and i think indian River County where you can see miles in all directions. It traverses a river (not sure which one... Maybe it is Indian River?) and miles of marsh surrounding the river.

We frequent N. Georgia, Eastern Tenn, & W. North Carolina every year and sometimes twice a year. Have pulled a 25 ft (not so heavy) travel trailer all over the Smokies and surrounding Appalachians.

We won't be towing this summer, but will be driving from Miami to southeastern Oregon and then up to central Washington State. Looking forward to seeing the various western US mountain ranges and beautiful surrounding areas.

If one has a very narrow margin of desired performance (towing at 60-62) that may be a logical choice, however, the vast majority of people do not have a such a narrow margin of desired performance.

I've heard that when the g56 was offered on 3500 DRW's, they only came with 4.10's

I test drove a 2013 DRW g56-equipped Tradesman 3500 before finding my 2500. I didn't like the gearing. But could see how it could be useful for a car hauler that has a few mountains to deal with

What a horrible travesty that 2019 3500 SRW AS69RC owners may have just a slight amount of additional grunt in 1st and 2nd with these horrible 3.73 “compromise” gears......

Orrr maybe, possibly, maybe, the engineers have finally figured out they're putting unnecessary stress on the driveline and opted for a more conservative gear ratio. You keep touting your lower Aisin gears, that only helps the engine and does nothing aft of the tail shaft.
The same stress is still being transmitted through the driveline regardless of transmission.

A few more rpm on the crankshaft hurts nothing, especially when towing. EGT's are easier kept in check as well as staying up on the torque curve. The powerband.

Every single QSB 6.7 I've operated in a crane has been factory governed at 2500 rpm when on the stick. In other words, any function (when on outriggers) automatically ramps up the rpm. You can go in and change the default settings but this is where they set it from the factory (Grove/Manitowoc) This is obviously where they want you to run, but then again running Bob tail isnt a concern of theirs :)

RPMs aren't a bad thing when working an engine, and the lower final drives can only help the longevity of the equipment.

I just went from a 2004 2500 3.73 gears to a 2016 3500 with bags and the Aisin and let me tell yah, WHY didn't I do this sooner! This truck is so sweet I couldn't be happier than a pig in ****! I have a Lance 855S Camper I slide in and I swear, I don't even feel it like I did on the 2500. A push of a button, the truck levels it all out and literally no squat with 4k in the bed! ME SO HAPPY. The Aisin transmission is amazing and I cant get over the low rpm's the truck is running in. The ride is also amazing.
Yes, I am a happy camper! :)

Careful, your will stir up the 3.42 haters!

Well my friend, it is what it is. Totally impressed!

Me too. We bought our RAM in Colorado and drove in 1350 miles home in 48 hours and to motel receipts. (12:25 Monday to 12:25 Wednesday) 80 MPH on I-80 for hours on end at 1750 RPM. Tows at a combined 24500 pounds just great.

I would have to run the numbers again. If I didn't like it I would put 19.5's on and get it closer to 3:73's. What are the numbers with 3:42 and 3:73? I think I can use percentages to come up with it.
At 80 MPH 6th gear .63.
RPMs
3.42 = 1750
3.73 = 1910
4.10 = 2100
