What are some signs of impending injector failure?

CARB compliance sticker? HELP

I think the Gates water pump would be fine. I replaced my OEM water pump on my '02 (still operating fine) at 216,000 miles with a Gates. The Gates water pump currently has logged 140,000 miles.

I don't think that the Cummins water pumps are any better since I have witnessed three OEM water pumps fail on three different 3rd generation trucks - each with less than 100,000 miles on them.

Nice. Thanks for the info.

Had a gates go 70k on mine and went with it when I sold it. Just bought one delivered today from Geno's for a buddy.

I've run Gates with no issues, just didn't last as long, 150K vs 250K for the original, but that was in my 2nd Gen 12-valve. CR Water Pumps have been "problematic" at best.....;)

No, not worth the savings when you have to do it on the side of the road, invariably in inclement weather, and dip water form a ditch to fill the radiator again. Gates is a get home pump in the boony box, and if it gets you home more than once good luck. Went thru 2 of them in 30k and gave up. Bought a new Cummins pump and forgot about it +250k ago.

Only early failures on the Cummins WP's I know about were the reman line they offered, think they quit them because of that and they only cost $10 less than a new Concentric. What has happened to Concentric in the last couple years is another story. They may have out sourced the building to one of the lower I-am-so-damned-lost-istans and QC went out the window.

I installed the Gates water pump last time. My 2003 Ram went through three pumps in 110,000 miles, first one went out with lots of noise, the second one was dealer installed and it only lasted around 30K before it started leaking bad. The Gates pump has been fine so far, no leaks, no squeals. Maybe it will last, at least its fairly easy to change out. The Gates has been on there about three years now. Its as reliable as my last OEM pump and it looks like its going to be fine for the long haul.

OK, kind of a CTD newbie here, so a few dumb questions....

First of all, THANKS for the Gates info. I would have gone there trusting the "branding". IMHO, the problem today is that most companies have been bought up by hedge funds, insurance funds, some kind of finance organization and they hire some snot nosed brat with a shiny new Harvard MBA or Bschool degree to run them. Since they are in and from the world of finance, they know only one thing...MAKE MORE MONEY. They have no idea what a product is, what a customer is, how a company is built, they only know how to extract the max from "branding" before the company sinks in a morass of their ignorance and they float away on the golden parachute........Rant mode off....

Do you buy your Cummins water pump from Cummins or FIAT/Chrysler? I have jobber accounts for my import stuff but am a babe in the domestic woods.

When these things fail, do they just leak water or does temp go nuts? You can guess why I am asking that one. Assume you replace thermostats at same time as a prophylactic measure???

Gates WP's are classified as "Get Home" items. When you get home go to Cummins and get the WP from them, that seems to be the safest way to go. You can keep the Gates item for backup.

I switched to Gates and so far still haven't had it fail. My Gates water pump didn't appear to be cheap, it has outlasted the last two OEM pumps. They are all imports now anyway, been that way for many years. I have a machine shop and have to buy Chinese equipment because that's my only choice many times. Gates are not throw away parts anymore than Mopar or Cummins. This stuff all comes from the same factories guys. The better known brands just have higher quality control supposedly.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I am on the other side of a PITA and expensive national border. I have had many issues over the decades with using non-OEM water pumps in VW/P/A engines, and I have heard more than enough condemnations of Gates pumps for CTD that definitely keeps them off of my list.

Spent some time calling around here...and for the benefit of other Canadians I had more than a few surprises...and prices that will make those South of 49 crap!

My jobber (mostly import stuff) actually has pumps in stock: Gates at $70.44, GM (whoever that is) at $63.23 and OEM for $ 332.82. Dealer wholesale was $316 for the pump but $481 (!!!!) for the idler/tensioner assembly. By for the cheapest was Cummins at $295 for the pump and $2xx for the tensioner/idler (it IS a cummins part #3947574 for my engine, but I did not write down price). Belts hard to find, but dealer has one at $103.

Now, remember these are not real dollars, the are Loonies at about 78% if a greenback, but still goofy pricing to put it mildly. And I though Audi was abusive! Ordered the pump and tensioner from Cummins, will pick up belt and thermostat from dealer.

Thanks for the replies

Patrick,

Well OK gotta do what ya gotta do. I did install the Gates several years ago on my '05. So far, so good.
