A friend was asking me "When did the first Ram trucks come out with mandatory DEF fluid" ? He is considering purchasing a pre owned one, but would like to know that question.
Question #2 is, "Are current year, and future year Ram trucks going to continue to use the (Dreaded) DEF fluid" ?
Thanks for your reply.

You don’t specifically say if he wants DEF or not, but it sounds like not.

I would highly recommend DEF if possible. Like everything made by man there are some failures, but there are benefits too. The main benefit to DEF is that it greatly reduces the need for the EGR to feed exhaust into the intake. EGR use on the pre DEF (07.5-12) trucks is much higher than 13+, and even lower on the 19+ trucks.

EGR is much more dreaded than DEF.

Don't be worried about a truck that has DEF. If he were to avoid a DEF truck, he'd be giving up on a lot of comfort and convenience! For as if worried about the expense of DEF, it's a wash with the fuel mileage of a DEF to pre-DEF truck. Main thing for him to avoid is a deleted truck! They're a fine waiting to happen! As @AH64ID has mentioned, the newer trucks have a lot of benefits to them! I would love to upgrade into a newer truck, but the finance dept hasn't located the funds yet! I'll keep throwing my change in the jar and hope for the truck fairy to grant me one! :p

I’m on tons of forums and pages on FB and with exception to that one guy in NJ who had to junk his truck I have yet to see someone come on and say they were fined for being deleted. I’m sure there’s a handful of people out there that were made an example of that the media has latched onto, (not the sellers of delete programs, we all know about that) but outside of this forum there are 10s of thousands of deleted rigs running around and the mass hysteria/doom and gloom is not an accurate representation of people being fined/arrested etc..

According to my step-son, the EPA will be work their way down the food chain regarding deletes.

Slowly but surly the feds are withholding highway funds for what ever reason they deem fit. My guess is inspections for registration will be next. That will catch a few of the delete guys.

We have emission inspections and delete rigs are plentiful around here. The CEL isn’t on and all the monitors pass the readiness test and it passes. The tunes take care of fooling the sensors. Think VW scandal.

I don't think that anyone is telling folks they "cant" do it, just that its risky given the increasing scrutiny on them, after-all its their truck and their dollars. Dealers are increasingly becoming not interested in taking them in on sale / trade, or working on them, etc... As far a passing inspections,...I have tint and a few other contra-ban items on my truck; but like the delete crowd; I have "a guy" to pass the state inspections so its all good (until it aint)... FWIW.. to me the miniscule fuel savings is not worth the risk of being potentially stuck with a 100K truck, and I think that is the point being made to those who are asking. I plan to buy another new one when my MaxCare runs out in 8y... Hopefully they'll have a flat floor in the back row :D
