P7207F Service DEF System See dealer questions???

Thanks, TDR Staff
Hey guys.

Just got back from hauling 13,000 pounds of rock and the truck is running great. Just got the “Service DEF System See Dealer” light. My check engine light was on as well. Plugged in my Bosch code reader and got P207F code and cleared the code. The check engine light went out but the see dealer message is still there. My soot filter is reading empty and I had just below half tank of DEF.

Made an appointment at Dodge Tuesday morning.

when I look up the code it says bad DEF and or some guys said the dealer replaced a sensor? I added some Peak DEF just for fun.

Anybody experienced this?
My main question is can I drive it or will it go into limp mode? My dealer is 40 miles away and I’d hate to drive that far in limp mode! I have work this weekend and it’s tough to go without until Tuesday.

thanks for any advice or info!

the code is actually p207f

The Code reader says, “ redundant quality performance”

it won’t clear but check engine light stayed off, at least to the gas station and back.

That deals with the quality of the DEF. Could be bad DEF or it could be a bad sensor.

Does your code reader have the ability to show DEF concentration?

You should get a mileage countdown before limp mode. You can start/stop the engine as long as there are miles remaining. When the miles goes to zero the next time you restart, refuel, or have an extended idle the truck will limit to 5mph.

My Bosch reader is really old, I don’t think it will tell DEF concentration but I’ll check to see. Does the amount of miles given on the count down vary by issue or is it standard? How many can I expect to see?

thanks for your response

I believe it’s standard across all DEF issues, and 150.

My dad had a DEF issue this summer and drove a couple hindered miles after the countdown hit zero, but it was defiantly in limp mode at the next restart (in his driveway). He did say that the 5mph is max, empty, and downhill. He could barely do 1-2 mph up his driveway.

Ouch! I’ll try not to drive it over the weekend. I have a 70 mile round trip commute to work on Monday, then another 40 to the dealer.
Hoping it’s something simple, it’s been running really well and my DEF filter stayed empty all day.

Your DPF gauge has nothing to do with the SCR system that uses DEF.

Just curious what DEF do you typically use and how often do you use it?

P207F attached some lite reading, goes over the info behind that one.

Unfortunately the quality sensor is listed as part of the DEF tank. Does not show it can be pulled in the truck.

There is a nice Removal and Install procedure for the DEF Tank, probably lots of videos out there as well. Unfortunately it's too big to attach. Flip me a PM with an email address if you think you would want it can send it that way.

Anyone know of any TDR articles that tackle this issue?

The count down to de-rate is miles and not time. When I went through it on mine, you could watch the odometer as the miles tick down. Once you hit zero and shut down, it's that dreaded 5mph as @AH64ID mentions! How long was the DEF in the tank prior to message? allow have the amount of DEF needed in tank, especially if in a hotter climate as heat and DEF don't get along. Hope you won't get stuck and dealer can get it fixed without long wait on parts with the UAW thing going on! Good luck.

I fill up at a Maverick semi station that has a DEF pump. However yesterday I was below half tank for the first time and after this happened ran down and grabbed a jug of Peak DEF. Didn’t look at the date, apparently I need to do that as well. I’m also considering just buying DEF at the dealer to avoid any warranty issues. My check engine light has stayed off after trying to clear the code, I’m going to drive around town this morning and bid a few jobs, I’ll be closely watching for a countdown message and will stop driving then.

I’ve put about 12k on the truck since September 1st so I’ve been burning through the DEF.

I sweet talked the person who scheduled my appointment for this Tuesday to give me a loaner vehicle. She said she would have one available. I can’t help but be like, I just paid 70k for this thing and it’s been 6 weeks! I’m under no impression this will be a trouble free truck, I just hope to do my best to maintain it properly and when there is an issue it’s covered under the expensive warranty I purchased!

I’ll report back after I bid my jobs, it’s gone away for some people…

DEF is DEF, but it fresh and at the lowest price you can find. The dealership is going to be overpriced and likely not as fresh.

So….I’m waiting for my Forman after driving 5 miles or so and the message is gone, No CEL either.

Understood on the DEF, the Peak was 40$ at my local gas station!!! I normally pay like 7$

If the message stays away and same with the CEL I’ll probably still go to my appointment at the dealership. However they don’t seem that friendly and it’s irritating.

Who cares about the folks running the counter at the service desk.

What really matters is who is touching your truck.

A bit of a long shot, but worth mentioning, look under your truck where the DEF tank is located and there will be an access plate with3 of 4 bolts. If there is any white crystals growing there, the DEF pump may be leaking through the connector! That's what was happening on mine until the level part of the pump died and sent me into de-rate. Pump worked just showed no DEF in tank which caused codes and the de-rate! Just worth pointing out another thing to look for. Since my pump replacement. DEF usage has been quite pleasent then what it was. Not sure how long it had been leaking. Hope the gremlins have left!

well, drove around town for almost 3 hours and the problem fixed itself. I wonder if running the DEF level down to 1/3 had anything to do with it?

Running down to 1/3 should not have any negative effect. I routinely run mine as low as I can before filling up, the system is designed to be used like the fuel tank.

See TDR issue 114 and 115, The Rest of the Story for some additional info on P207F fault. You probably need Alfa OBD or a good scanner to see what the DEF concentration is that the ECM is seeing.

I will check that out!!!
I’m also keeping my Tuesday appointment to see if they’ll check it out. I’ll most likely have time tomorrow to follow your advice.

thank you!
