My older son simply said I should delete the grid heater on my 08, since the truck isn't driven much in the winter and is garage kept. Also, he has stated that for the most part the truck will start around 0F with no problem.

Yes it will start without any issues. Cummins lists 10°F as the temp where starting aids are suggested, but I've started at -25°F without a grid heater and while she wasn't happy, she started.

Same here with Gen3 5.9. Sounds very angry started at - Temperatures without the Grid but starts and runs fine after a couple seconds.
Behaves like a decent Diesel Engine.
