Grizzly. . Rick also owns a 2005 Dodge 3500 like yours, and this F-550 will walk all over it when it comes to towing and handling the weight of his backhoe. With a Cummins inside, there's nothing that will even come close to this truck as far as all around useful!

?

Grizzly... i don't understand why you dont like the Ford truck at all... . do you have any evidense to back up your opinion? Or just don't like it because it says "FORD" on it? I am not understanding you here.

Grizzly i don't get it?. . the F550 has a HUGE dana rear. . like 3 times the size of our dana 80. . it has amuch lager radiator and intercooler, if he had gotten a crew cab it would have been even better. The transfer case is huge compared the the dodge, the frame rails are straight and much bigger and the brakes are much better then the dodge... the only bad part is that the rear ratios are way low ie 456 or so i'd like to see a 350 or 320 rear ratio. If ford offered a cummins in a f550 they would sell like hot cakes. . the dodge is great but many of the dodge lovers here love the engine much much more then a dodge itself... . the only scary thing i didn't like to see or hear was the made in china stamps some of the f550s had on some parts. . thats not cool. .

rabbit, part of the reason for the lower gear rear,is because of the taller tires that the 550's run,and the fact that they are subject to be used for heavy service. 3. 55,3. 73 gears just really isnt a wise thing in a truck that see's heavy service. the drive line takes a beating, and you have premature failures. as for some of the peoples train of thought on brands, well thats just a fact of life. by far the worst luck i have had in trucks has been with the dodge brand,gm and ford have treated me far better[gas or diesel, auto or manual transmission]. i make a living in contruction and ranching,so if my trucks dont go to work,i dont make deposits in the bank. i have never had a gm,ford or dodge diesel fail from engine problems,i have never had a gm or ford fail from a manual transmission problem,i have with dodge. i have never had a frontend fail prematurely on a gm or ford ,i have with two dodges. in 05 i made another dodge purchase simply because i didnt like the engine options from the current ford or gm trucks, other than a slave cyl failure and recall to replace the front springs, i'am fairly satisfied with the truck. but i certainly didnt trade off my 02 ford. . if i stayed closed minded towards dodge all these years,i would have been takeing a larger gamble with a 6. 0 in a ford or a 6. 6 in a gm,but then again i know several folks with both brands who havent had a single problem,ya never know!

..

YEP. . an Explorer has the same value used as an 06' F-550. . yeah you're really smart there buddy  ... you never mentioned what year those vehicles were either? maybe late 80's early 90's? well, if so, no wonder you had problems with them. The Ford truck will last MUCH longer than any dodge truck {motors excluded}. Look at all the major construction companies for example. . the Fords in their fleets have many miles and abuse on them and the dodges? where are they. . well, they broke apart and were trashed within 3 years ... Ford makes a way better and stronger frame/cab nowdays does than dodge. Engine, well obviously we all agree Cummins is the best.

...

that truck will still sell for $35,000 in 6 years... a 3500 Dodge will be worth about $13k... you know it as well as I do... believe me Grizz, I like Dodges just as much as the next TDR member, i PREFER them actually. . i'm just saying that a 550 Ford with a Cummins will outlast any Dodge. .

...

This thread has gotten rediculously off topic because a few hard headed individuals decided to try and ruin someone elses nice project truck and they should be ashamed... since we like to talk about age... i'll give you this "young folks" phrase to figure out Mr. Grizzly... it has to do with being jealous of what others have "Don't hate the player, Hate the Game" :-laf :-laf ...

This has got to be the closest thing to perfect for an RV toter without going to Freightliner, Int'l etc. I only have two questions:

1. I assume that removing the pushrods from the last two cyl. is close to impossible?? May require lowering the back of the motor??

2. What kind of clearance is there between the firewall and the back of the cyl. head and bell housing.

For those that use their trucks everyday, and/or also live in a virtual dictatorship run planned community that is barely tolerant of regular 1 ton dually's, the Ford F550 is a great alternative, EXCEPT FOR THE 6. 0 PSD. The F550's have larger axles and brakes than the F450's.

You at Autoworld are to be commended for what appears to be a GREAT conversion. If I find the right truck I could be next...

actually this motor fit in there quite nicely - its sitting pretty level, except for the clocked degrees for alignment down the drivetrain, i will have to ask the guys about how much clearance there is but i know it was not an issue @ all.

thanks, we try to do everything perfectly since 95% of our conversions go home to far-away places :)!!

we are booked into june right now, so if you find that truck - get on the schedule!!!:)

Looks like a very professional job. Congrats to the owner.

Sweet job on that truck guys! Makes me proud to be from Montana :D

I will have to check you guys out if I ever make it down that way.

Ken and Dawna you do great work!

the guys got most of the sending units wired in today - tomorrow they are going to do the cruise control and tach, things look good. will let you know on that tomorrow - you still coming up this summer??? fishing is a good excuse... . lol

thanks for all the cudos guys, ken drove it home tonite, i will get some final pictures in the next couple days outside - rick is basically on his way. was going to oregon to pick up his friend, we should see him saturday i think, he is very excited... lol :)

we have already started on our next project, an older F550 for a repeat customer - he is a beekeeper from bozeman, mt. just throwing in a 12v and nv4500. piece of cake... .

then we are doing an 03 F350 with a 05 cummins and 6 speed from bridger, mt.

(wow 2 in a row from montana... lol)

then a 91 suburban with an 01/nv4500 from california - getting phone calls every day and doing quotes but don't know who's next after that, i'm sure i will soon... . lol :), so we are very busy and with racing season coming on FAST, we will be spending weekends on the road with the funny car - we drove 12,000 miles last summer, the old cummins purred right along... . lots of late nights...

I am going to try and plan a trip, maybe make an appointment and have you guys deal with the cruise control. Looking forward to more pics.

Thanks.
