Hello, thinking of buying a 2002, drw manuel 2wheel to haul my 5th wheel

could any body tell me some things to look for. currently have a 2007 4x4 2500, 5. 9 auto. also the 2002 has 75800 miles on it , they want $16,000

does the 2002 have a good rep, probibly put a fass fuel pump in

Most '02s have the brass V-44 experiment on them that didnt work. They have alot of pluses like 4 wheel discs and 3rd gen style calipers though. See if it has a new VP if not those miles are deffinintly in the neighborhood of it crappin its pants.

Definately look at the condition of the VP and the lift pump. Best case would be that the truck would already have replacement pumps on it. The 2002 is out of the 53 block danger so you should be OK there.

I have a 2002 6sp. Pull 11000# fifth wheel... LOVE IT! Have Fuel/Boost/Pyro setup. Long bed recommended for a 5th... I have short bed... jackknifed into cab... ya only do it once... . Happy motoring.

I post a similar comment everytime I read about the problems you are likely to experience with a Gen II electronic engine and I'm sure many are tired of reading it.

I had an '01 HO/6speed that I retired with 325,000 miles and the truck is still in the family today with 350,000 miles running great but only seeing occasional use. I replaced one VP-44 at a little over 100,000 miles due to mistaken troubleshooting of a Jacobs Exhaust Brake that was sticking closed and causing an off-idle loss of power. When my mechanic friend and I realized the mistake he arranged for me to sell my still excellent OEM VP-44 to a customer of his with an old truck with a bad pump at a good price for both of us. The second VP-44 installed in my truck is still in service today. It is a Cummins reman pump.

The same truck still has the third fuel transfer/lift pump installed. The first failed at around 60k miles and was replaced under warranty. I asked my mechanic to replace the second one when it was still working fine somewhere around 150k to 200k because I was hauling commercially and running 13k or 14k miles per month and didn't want to chance a failure on the road away from home. The third pump is still in the truck and works fine.

The only explanation I can offer for the durability in my truck was lots of clean Flying J fuel and routine Fleetguard filter changes at 15k mile intervals or less.

thanks for the responses, so how do I check to see if the vp-44 has been replaced? I know the dealer won"t tell me an honest answer

That's a bit high for an 02, unless it looks like brand new. There is an 06 here for 26,000, 4x4, 4 door, 6 speed, loaded, with low miles. I'd pay them no more than 12K out the door, but every market is different.

My 02 is on it's 2nd pump, not sure if it's going south again or not. 3 lift pumps, the last one didn't even last a year before it lost pressure. I've only had the truck about 15K miles, but it has sucked at least 3K in parts in that time between the transmission, the lift pumps, wheel bearings, and other issues.

I paid $28K for my 02' 4x4 Quad Cab LB new. I would guess that truck could have been about a good deal at $24-$25K new. I would also think that $10K - $12K would be a more reasonable range. I know a guy who got a clean 01' 2500 with about the same mileage out of the Dallas area for about $6K. I wish I could stumble upon a bargain like that to flip.

The 02 HO has a questionable vp for sure. I have changed them out as low as the 20k mile point. A reman pump will have a sticker on top of the FPCM or black paint in some cases. If it was changed during the warranty period any dealer can check history.

On my 2002 with about 111,000 miles rebuilt trans , A/C evap core, compressor & all that go with it, + fuel pump and anouther problem I have for the last 20,00 miles
