In 2017 GM big vans get small diesel.

Fuel spill

I just got my 2007 International 4300 with DT466 motor a couple months ago, noticed then it had a pretty fast idle, but it cranked and ran ok, but yellow engine light would go on and off. But just last week weather temps dropped and I took it on a delivery to Florida, and stopped at a truck stop on the way, and it would not crank after it had been running for several hundred miles. Finally, after some starting fluid, it cranked for few seconds. Waited couple hours and it started and idled with a very hard lope, which shook the whole truck. It idled this way for most of the trip back, but cruised good several hundred miles. Got back home, it would not start next day until it got more starting fluid, and then it idled normally. Took it to diesel shop, and no codes were active, just had a bunch of stored codes. Just reading this forum, where is best place to start troubleshooting?
FUEL RETURN CHECK VALVE?
INJECTOR CONTROL PRESSURE SENSOR?
FUEL FILTER PRESSURE REGULATOR?
OIL RAIL O-RINGS OR SEALS?
FUEL INJECTOR SEALS OR O-RINGS?
INTAKE HEATER GRID?
SENSORS FOR OIL, AIR, TEMP?

start at a shop that has the correct scanner for your engine. i use international master diagnosic loaded onto a laptop. 2007 466's are heui motors so your best option is to hook up the scanner while you spin it over. you will need 500psi or so of actuation pressure for the computer to turn the injectors on. if you have that and you can hear the injectors clicking, check fuel supply next. also, you have to have valid signal from both cam and crank sensors.

appreciate the info, truck is cranking fine now, with the outside temps are over 50F, but my biggest concern is the real rough hard lope while it was idling a few days ago on my trip to Florida. it sounded like it had one of those souped up hot rod cams, and it shook the whole truck.
someone told me that the FUEL RETURN CHECK VALVE could be sticking in the open position, and it could be removed and cleaned.
have you ever seen this problem?

I still maintain that you need to narrow it down to fuel, high pressure oil, or electrical.
That said, I have not seen any issues with the return check valve, but if I really suspected it was giving trouble, I would just replace it. Even with international's greatly inflated pricing, it can't be that high. Pull the doghouse and the return check valve is right there on the back of the head complete with quick connect fitting. Also, do you have dual or single fuel tanks?

single tank,
also, I am probably wrong, but is the Return Check Valve not at the bottom or the side of the fuel filter? I do not have any manuals, but there is some kind of valve at the bottom of the fuel filter (maybe a water drain), and another valve on the side of the fuel filter which has a fuel line running from it that goes to a part which is mounted on the front drivers side of the block, and another fuel line comes from that part back to this valve at the side of the fuel filter. this valve at the side of the fuel filter has some kind of rubber piece on it, which goes in and out.

I believe that you are right that the return valve is at the bottom of the filter housing. Do you have the list of codes that were stored in it? That would be a helpful start. If you have codes for low icp I would be suspicious of the o-rings on the high pressure oil rail. You can check them by removing the valve cover and starting the engine, a little leakage is normal, you will see if one or two are leaking a lot more. I don't know why the o rings would cause a lope though.

Maybe an injector or low icp. Not sure if you will get engine codes or just body codes but try this-
Turn key on, engine off. Press cruise on and cruise resume buttons on the steering wheel at the same time and release them. Watch the odometer window and you should see a number of fault codes in the display. You may have to press the buttons again or just wait and it will start to list them 1 at a time. It will be a number series like 612 150 2 14p. Write them down and let us know.
I have heard people talk about cam position sensor issues also, but personally haven't had issues.

pretty cool morning in the low 40's, cranked and idled with a lot of missing, had slight lope, but not bad as before.
tried to pull the codes as per your instructions several times, but it would not work. did not want to burn something out, so stopped.
will take it to shop asap. thx.

i have a 07 4300 466 they stoped for fuel would not start hit with starter fluild fired right up run good found mech fuel pump check valve bad and fuel seals on suc lines bad replaced both starts good cold when gets hot will not crank hit with spray starts right up was told to change cam sen no change scaned when hot only had 340 ip press pulled ipr oring brooken replaced ipr no change cpuld the ipc be prob

Scags, kinda late, but need to check for codes. Set park break, turn on key not starting engine and push cruise on and resume at same time, once released watch the engine lights. Amber will flash three times then red will blink, then amber again. Will be 3 digit codes, a set of fast blinks then pause then more fast blinks, then pause. Im gonna assume youre gonna see icp faults with the symptoms you described, but need codes to start pointing.

I have 2008 international 4300 model I have a problem when I turn off the engine and try to start it back it doesn't start if I spray with starter fluid it starts right away I checked the pressure hey give me only 200 but when it starts and goes up to 900 and runs perfect no problems at all . Can anybody let me know what's the problem is? Thanks!!

Sounds a lot like you need to replace the o rings on the high pressure oil rail under the valve cover. Does it seem to start good when you first try in the morning then not want to start when the engine is warm? Had a similar issue on a 2007 I used to work on. basically oil thins out when warm and leaks past the o rings. once its cooled down and thickened up it gives higher pressure because the oil cant leak past seals anymore. This is all inside the engine so you wont see the leaks outside the valve cover.

I have a 2003 International 4300 and i have to keep it plugged in overnite so it will fire in the morning. now it wont start in the morning without a shot of starting fluid. I think my block heater is bad but it is now decent at nite and shouldnt have to keep it plugged in. It seems like its losing fuel pressure or getting air into the fuel lines. once started with starting fluid the accelerator pedal is non responsive until the engine is running for 5 min or so and runs really rough. after running for a good 15-20 min it smooths out and runs fine the rest of the day. can anyone give me some ideas as to what might be going on?

thank you
