A little late to thread, but went through a very similiar scenario about 2yrs ago with our 97 (now retired). Everything pointed to PCM on pass side firewall.

This after changing ESS twice... ... each time truck would start and run for several hours and or days before quittin far from the shop. Last time drove 150 miles at night, no O/D , alt ,speedo etc. We tracked down a PCM and worked again for a few hrs.

Ended up back tracing everywire on plugs from PCm from block to block and through firewall to inside fuse panel. Found a broken wire about 10" from inside fuse panel that IIRC was the power wire on that 10A fuse. Repaired that wire and no more issues. Was tempted to burn it on more than one occassion during this process though (and of course it was in the middle of winter also). LOL

I feel really stupid, I was looking to move a mountain and all it was, was a molehill! I should have, but I didn't check all the fuses in the fuse panel, I checked the fuse panel cover and thought it can't be any of these little things.

I did check the fuses in the PDC though and they were ok. I was sure it was going to be a fusiable link, relay or the ESS.

My mechanic said always start with the little stuff first. While I was looking to find PCM, ESS and Solenoid etc in the FSM, he was checking the fuses. It turned out the be the 10A Engine fuse. That little fuse stopped my shutoff solenoid rod from staying up, wouldn't charge, no tach, no speedometer, no wait to start, no intake heater grids, no cruise control and trans in limp mode - 3rd gear only.

I'm sorry to put you guys through all this trouble, but I thank you a million for helping me!

Ed

Ed,

I think that all will agree with me when I say that you didn't put us through any trouble at all. .

We all benefit from these discussions and learn as the thread goes on. Now we know when someone else posts the identical problem in the future what may be causing it. No one suggested the fuse, we will all remember that now.

Glad that it is fixed... .

Mike.

Anytime a controller is suspect check powers and grounds The best way is to test them with a load to be sure you do not have any broken strands in the harness
