Curious why O’Reilly house brand Dexron VI instead of a brand name?
  • Because I saw no logical reasoning to pay exactly $2.00 more per quart for the Valvoline
  • The O’Reilly house brand has done me well for over 101,855 miles (but who’s counting?)
  • O’Reilly doesn’t “produce” any of their fluids. Based on my geography, I’m quite sure Valvoline is in the house brand Dexron VI bottle anyway.
  • Last but not least......just to annoy you.

When in doubt pull the MSDS sheet for any sort of chemical they typically list the real mfg.

I run the store brand ATF+4 car quest stuff all the time, I try to pull the spec sheets it's all pretty good stuff by the numbers.

I cant easily find the DEX-VI, but the O'Riellys Global ATF is good oil by the numbers would not expect any issues with the DEX-VI from them.

O'Reilly house brand looks like they might use two packages who do the custom blending, both are pretty impressive operations.

Do you think there is a chance they do Amsoil also :D:eek::rolleyes:

I noticed carquest oil was sourced from Warren oil. It is good oil

Are you really going to get bad oil from these places , sure a lot of hype, and you sure can get caught up in stuff like Amsoil . I tried some for my rear axle change, the price was really no different then other synthetic axle fluid.

But here is the thing for me it was a one ,and done on Amsoil. Its off the shelf from now on ,or a good buy on Amazon.

That Global ATF is the first I’ve ever seen to cover all those specs including ATF4.

Multi spec fluids have always confused me. My wife's Mercury specs Mercon SP. The service manual specifically states no other Mercon fluid is compatible unlike most OEM fluid supercedings.
Then multi spec fluids like the Global above says it works with Mercon SP and Mercon V.

I know in the power steering and transfer case, any good ATF would do, but with the Chrysler based automatic transmissions, it had better be the right stuff or else!

Same with the Mercon SP. Notice the clever wording they use above, "will perform" o_O

I've not yet found one that actually meets the specs of SP. So Motorcraft it is for me.

I never said you would get bad oil from any source. I just stated confidence in the quality control and additives used by warren oil.

That being said, i don't criticize anyone for using T5 or T6 rotella. I'm just not sold on how they make their base stocks from natural gas. I really don't care if their base stocks are "more pure" as they advertise. I just want something with time-tested lubricating abilities. If i were going to drink it, i would care if it is more pure. But i really don't plan to ingest it, so i only care about it's lube properties. It does meet all the specs. I just don't use it.

I remember about a decade ago when they were advertising using parafin as a base stock. That was not a good advertising strategy because people who are more familiar with paraffin wax than paraffin oil imagined their equipment being lubricated with wax. And that idea of using paraffins still doesn't seem like the best lubrication to me.

So now they adverise that they make more pure base stocks out of natural gas. I believe it is more pure. I just doubt it has the best lub properties. But then again, i am too picky to use 5w 40 in my truck. I am convinced that 15w 40 and or 20w 50 will hold up better in the high temp environs of our engines.
These new engines run hotter due to emissions requirements than they did 20 years ago.

Here is an article describing Shell rotella's GTL synthetic base oil production process and you can see that it still involves paraffins. It is not a promotional piece from Shell, but an objective independent source of info. The article doesn't say anything bad about GTL synthetics. I just am not sold on it. And yes Shell did use paraffins in their synthetic oil production. They just changed the wording to make people believe they no longer use paraffins. (Or forget that they did) See below.

I suppose you chose Rotella because thats what I run ,or it seems to be one of the most popular. I have run T4 for over 21 years now with just two different trucks. sure I have used a different brand a few times ,but pretty much T4. I have no idea what your concerns are on oils ?? I have none really, I am a firm believer in not trying to see how many miles I can get out of an oil change. I don't run extended intervals or test my oil . To me its just as easy to follow the manual or at least my own experience over the years, it works for me .

You are talking Chinese to me on all this oil specs. I do understand where you coming from on the 5W-40, but thats mostly for the extreme cold ,what 0 or below on start ups ?? I run just 15-40. If I decide to run a synthetic, now that I am going to go once a year on my oil changes, unless mileage dictates something different, I will run T6 15-40. Thanks, I appreciate the article ,and I will read it , but I am just not caught up in all this oil thing. Plus I change my oil filter thru the fender :D:eek:

I think you misread. I don't use Rotella. I did a few times when they had the massive rebate. But if it is not really cheap, I think there are better
