Anatomy of a Frantz toilet paper bypass oil filter

Thanks, TDR Staff

AFE rep said the BHAF was a piece of...

Swepco Gear Oil

fkovalski, with the free oil changes, that does reduce the desire for this, but remember, full flow filters will only catch the larger particles, and not the smaller ones.

I honestly don't know what fleetguard claims for micron filtration for our oil filters, but I know it isn't able to filter down to 1/10th micron.

Ok, what are the pros and cons of the Frantz vs. the Gulf Coast filters? Different designs and theories, but cost isn't too much different if you shop around.

I believe the performance of both the Frantz and the Gulf Coast are identical. Then, the only difference is the canister. The Frantz canister comes apart at the base. The Gulf Coast splits in half. I can post some pics of an uninstalled Gulf Coast (since I just got one) if anyone wants.

Also, the Gulf Coast unit is Aluminum (Frantz is stainless steel).

A+ on the post Gary!

I really like the o-rings around the center piece. Wish I knew where you got those. Think Ill do that to mine.

The magnets are a great idea too. Heck, they can only go towards the paper. sure cant hurt much.

Edited: Removed the edits

Where would you return the filtered oil to on a 12 valve engine? Drilling and tapping a hole in the side of the pan doesn't excite me. How about in one of the valve covers? Maybe someplace else?

Guys with the 12 valve engines often return the oil thru a fitting into the oil fill tube... On my '91, I made a hole high in the pan, and returned there.

Excellent post Gary!!!

Great pics!!!

I've been running the identical plumbing setup for the past 90k, expect I haven't put on a swivel fitting. I'm using synthetics and stretching the changes, tp every 7500 and the full flow stratapore every other time. Analysis is good to 30k, then TBN starts to drop and I change the oil.

Like you said, very little mess unless you rush it.

One thing I found was the cheaper the paper, the tighter it's wound, but there's a lot of varience between brands. Knowing how much to take off that big roll of Scotts is kind of a guessing game.

Count me in!

This sounds very good to me. If there's a group purchase... . I'm in.

I also like Gary's idea of returning the oil through the filler cap. What part name/number are we looking for from Amsoil on the swiveling cap fitting?

One more thing... how much "other" stuff are we going to need to do this installation: mounting brackets, hoses, fittings???? It all looks fairly simple... I'm just wondering what Frantz supplies and we we need to buy at our local parts store?

Either way... I'm in on a group purchase.

Brackets, fittings, hoses, and everything come with it. Depends upon how/where you mount it if you need anything else. I mounted mine right to the inner fender, so just a little dab of paint in the holes that I drilled before I screwed it down. Not having the swivel fitting is a minor inconvenience.

If you wanted to get fancy, braided stainless hoses would be cool. Oo. Oo. Oo.

Group puchases are good, but I hope they can beat the $120 you get get them on ebay. (would rather deal directly with the dealer on this though).
