BIG, the only thing I remember about Arcola was all the Amish. Very cool, sleepy little town. That was 20 years ago, but I doubt thing have changed much...

Thanks Ya I dont think things have changed I talk to some Amish folks that are attending also they are trying to hook up with others there and see what they can do to help. I bought some farm equipment from them and im in the process of rebuilding to NEW condition. Arcola didn't look very big on Google maps and in the middle of farm country. Just How I Like it.

Here is a link to their homepage in case you do not already have this page.

I believe it is not very far from Decatur IL and also Tuscola IL, Arcola IL is right off of I57 south of Tuscola. Another Amish town nearby is Arthur IL which has some furniture making in the area.

I live just 30 minutes north of Arcola. There is a full hook-up campground in Effingham, Illinois, cable, electric sewer and cable tv hook up. Effingham is about 30 minutes south of Arcola. The name of the campground is Camp Lakewood. If you call, you will talk to Brian or Vanessa. Just tell them Uncle Grumpy said to call. We camp down their several times a year. I don't know of any campgrouds in the Arcola/Champaign/Decatur area that are still open. There is a State Park in Charleston, Fox Ridge, which is right on route 130, which would be east of Arcola. You can send me an e-mail at -- email address removed -- if I can be of any help. I know the area farily well. Arcola and Arthur are just 5 miles apart, however, Arthur has an outstanding place to eat called Amish Kitchen. Right on Rt. 33. It's next to a hardware store, and at the entrance for the overhead door company. Arcola has a great place downtown called Dutch Kitchen. In any case, if I can help, e-mail me.

Safe Travels,

Sounds like you made my day with a wealth of info just what I was looking for. We found things on line but its so much better to gain info from someone that has been or lives in the area of interest. Thanks for your help it is truly appreciated.

Glad I could help. Schied Diesel is also in Effingham. South route 45, which is Banker Street. There is a Tractor Supply store, too. Almost like a Farm and Fleet. They have a bit of everything. Also on South Route 45. There are 3 truck stops, 2 blue beacon truck washes, and an Iowa 80 truck wash/fuel stop.

As I said, if I can be of any help, send me an e-mail. Put Effingham in the subject box so I pay attention to it!!!!!

Safe Travels,

There's RV camping at Lake Shelbyville

Yes, there is Wolf Creek State Park, and Eagle Creek State Park, which, are actually in Findley. There is a neat little mom and pop cafe on the south side of the road on the main drag through town. A gun shop on the east side of town by the railroad tracks. Anyway... ... ... Illinois State Parks don't have water or sewer hook-up. If you are going to be someplace for a week or so, then you will have to hook up to your unit and find a water spout, and use the dump station. There is a nice state park on south route 130 in Charleston. If you want to stay in the Sullivan area, there is a great C. O. E. park called Bo Woods. They have w/e/s, hook-ups. This park has just been rebuilt, and you can get reservations via Reserve America. I have camped at all the above. In 1982 or 83 I was camping in the back of my truck with a topper on it when a tornado came real close to Wolf Creek. Wasn't one of my better weekend trips. Lots of places to camp around Arcola/Arthur.

I didn't know there was a campground in Shelbyville. Never heard of Robin Hood Woods. I checked their web site, and for their price, I can stay at Effingham, and have cable TV hook-up. And, no seasonal units. We have stayed at Holiday Campground in Roselawn, Indiana that had seasonal people, and this place was just one step away from a riot. The seasonal people thought they owned the campground. Go across the street to Oak Lake Campground, and there is a 100% difference in the people. I guess it is where you stay. At Holdiay when we would walk around, people put their noses in the air, like how dare some vacation people stay here. At Oak Lake, the seasonl people invite you to stop in and chat, sit around the campfire. We are up at Oak Lake at least twice a year. Anyway..... I did check with Woodall's and Trailer Life Directory, and Robin Hood Woods isn't listed in any of them. I will have to put Robin Hood Woods on my list of campground to check out this year. I may be missing something.

Thanks,
