Gotta convince the Missus !

I ordered a 70 gallon tank today from TANKFLOW also getting the camper filler to install in my caravan camper once it is built. Tank should arrive end of next week or later. I was told that they are behind on orders as they are swamped shipping lots of tanks to Louisiana

I think I will get a locking fuel cap for it and my truck Any recommendations of Locking caps?

Thanks Bill

Bed mat idea

Hey Bill, you might think about cutting the bed mat and maybe leaving it a little long to prevent items/stuff from sliding under the tank. I find that small items and dirt tend to get under the edge of the tank. The tank is rounded off as it approaches the floor and the corrugations of the bed floor allow fairly large items to get under the tank where they are difficult to get back out. I was thinking that if you cut you bed mat long and kind of rolled the edge up right next to the tank and put a screw or two you might be able to eliminate this issue completely. Get your locking cap from the company that you buy your tank from and you know it will fit. Ken Irwin

Kirwin, That's a good suggestion, I hate to cut the mat till I am sure of my install. I was thinking of placing a few 1/4 wooden strips (enought to support tank) under the tank to allow for air flow. On my old utility truck moisture from rain (no shell) collected under tank and had nearly rusted thru the botton of tank. I guess once I have my camper shell on truck the strips won't be needed.

Today I found out I may be driving to Mesa, Az. so tank will come in handy.

Do Tankflow tanks come with a drain plug

Tankflow said their locking caps were the same as a Dodge fuel cap

Do you have one Are they any good?

Transfer-Flow

My transfer flow is aluminum so no rust. The 1/8" rubber Transfer-Flow provides does put some space under the tank, but small items and dirt still get under the edge of the tank. The Transfer-Flow is baffled and I have stood on it so its pretty rigid but I don't think that I would put wood under it. You don't want it to move around driving down the road. My 98 gallon weighs about 800 lbs full of fuel. Ken Irwin

I do have the Dodge locking gas cap. Its OK if the thief is not determined to get your fuel. (Read this as it will keep kids out) There is no drain Plug on the Transfer-Flow but the sending unit hole is probably 3" in diameter for access. If you need to drain it you can just use the fuel pickup in the tank and jumper 12 V to the pump if you wanted.

Found this Bumper on a TDR thread

Nice looking in my opinion But I am afraid it would put me over front axle by a bit. I guess I could just leave my 70 gal in bed tank empty. I will weigh my truck next time I get to town

Hi All

Also I have a BedMat in my bed so I am hoping to be able to just place the tank on top of the Mat (should help cushion tank). Do you see any problem with leaving BedMat in place?

Thanks, Bill
I have the 30 gallon tank/toolbox in my truck and placed it on top of my bed mat. That was five years ago. No worries!

I just had a Caravan camper installed on my truck yesterday I would guess it weighs between 300 to 400 lbs. Today I weighted my truck with the newly installed Caravan camper, a bedrug, 70 gal transferflow steel in bed tank full of fuel, my truck tank was topped up with fuel and about 30#s of misc. stuff in the cab.

They include me @ 220lbs but weighmaster just told me to stand on scale and added my weight to the front axle weight, in hind site I should have been sitting behind the wheel as some of my weight would be on the rear axle (aprox 55lbs) which in turn would have a bit less weight on my front axle. as he is just use to Gross and Tare wt. and he was a bit confused you should see my weight slip I can barely make it out, and I was there. I kinda know what he meant, I found a mistake he subtracted my 220 lbs from the rear axle wt. The next time I go to the scales, I will print out a form as to how I want to weigh my truck and weighmaster can just fill in the blanks. As I don't need a certified weight slip at this time. I always give him a 5 to 10 buck tip for his trouble plus pay up front the 9 buck scale fee.

weights were as follows

Front axle, 4,880 lbs with me standing on scale

Rear Axle same conditions as above: 3,800lbs without me on scale

Total 8,680 lbs

I guess I can't place a nice front bumper on my truck without going over axle wt or I could place a bumper and run on empty :)

Front end GVW

GVW on front end of my 2004. 5 2500 is same as new 2006 3500 DRW. (5200) I carry about 4600# on front end of my truck when hauling my Cedar Creek & with 4 adults. It bothers me that new mega cabs don't have higher GVWs. You stretch out the wheel base and you put more load on the front end.

CUMMINZ, I agree as I assume most on this forum would. Which of the big 3 have the most front and rear axle weight capacity is it Ford? Is there a DOT reg or some other institution that has a rule regarding the total weight capacity for a Single Rear Trucks that states its shall not be greater than X. X seems to be 9900 or 10,000 lbs.

It appears that if you want a rig to carry a load you need to get a small engine, NO 4x4, Short wheel Base and no accessories to keep the truck weight down. With a truck like that all you need is someone to pull you up the grades.

O'Yeah, remember THEY all figure 150 lbs for us drivers so that mean I better park my truck and start riding a bike. My 2 cents

Transferflow Tank, Where did you place ground wires ?

I am getting around to wiring up my Transferflow tank. Instructions state

" Drill a 9/64" diameter hole in the inside of the driver's side frame rail. " I know this is only a small hole but I would rather not make any hole in frame as I tend to keep my trucks along time and rust is my major enemy hate to give it another place to start.

I figure I may just go to battery or some other place where there is already a grounding spot.

Would appreciate any information on what you did on your install.

Thanks, Bill
