Ok, this is for a friend..... this is what he has... . 1993 d360 ctd getrag, 186k miles, and he has had the truck for about a year. When he got the truck it had a slight old consumption problem, about 1 qt per 2k miles, didn't really leak out, and truck ran fine, except that it smoked a little, some gray/black mix.

So, now roll the clock foward about a year, and about 10k miles, a reman turbo and it is now smoking BAD! It is smoking gray/black out the exhaust more than ever, and the blow-by tube has a constant hi-pressure gray smoke comming out of it, and it is EXCESSIVE, and gets worse with rpm. The truck seems a bit lumpy now at idle, but seems to smooth out at above 1200rpm. anyhow, it is using about a gallon of oil every 500 miles. I was kinda thinking that it might be a hole in a piston, but I am not sure. He was thinking a blown head gasket. No water in oil/oil in water. any ideas guys????

Started after the reman turbo, mmmm ?? Is it possible oil that cools turbo getting burned ?

Probably wouldn't explain blow by though.

Yes, the turbo could have a bad seal, or the shaft could have been bad and won't seal/ Then you'd be pushing oil into the intake.

So yes a blown turbo rebuild could make the engine burn oil.

It could also be from a clogged oil return line... . and that would be YOUR FRIEND'S bad.

But I don't see that explaining blowby either... anyone?

I would take a hard look at the turbo outlet to check for oil. What bothers me is with oil getting past the turbo it's a prime canditate for a run away.

Any possible way oil could get into the turbo oil return line? That would cause it to come out the blow by tube.

I would start with the turbo - best - and easist canditate.

When I got my 92 it used oil like that and had the blowby issue. After a few months I blew the HG and when I took everything apart, I found that the engine had been overheated and had stuck 3 of 6 pistons, grooving the cylinder walls. This is pretty much the worst case scenario, but overheating can scuff things pretty bad pretty quick.

Hopefully your friend is luckier than I was.

thanks for the replys, he has it at a shop, and they told him that he has low compression, in 3 cyls, and needs to have the head pulled for further inspection.
